The Middleton co-op girls hockey team has made history.

The Metro Lynx — made up of girls from Middleton, Madison Memorial, Madison West, Madison Edgewood and Verona — reached the WIAA girls state hockey tournament for the first time in program history. The Metro Lynx defeated the Cap City Cougars, 3-0, in a WIAA sectional final held at the Sun Prairie Ice Arena last Friday.

Middleton is now the No. 1 seed at the state tournament and will play the fourth-seeded Beloit Memorial co-op Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum-Alliant Energy Center.

If the Metro Lynx wins there, it would advance to the state championship game Saturday at noon at the Alliant Energy Center.

“The girls have played really hard this season and have accomplished quite a bit thus far,” Lynx coach Mike McKersie said.

It’s been a historic season for the Lynx, and among their accomplishments are:

  • A 22-3 record, the best-ever for a Lynx team.
  • Wins over University School of Milwaukee, Hudson and the Central Wisconsin Storm for the first time ever
  • The Culver Cup championship
  • A share of the conference championship with the Cap City Cougars and the Rock County Fury
  • The most goals (141), assists (192) and points (333) ever scored by a Lynx team
  • Sydney Raaths, a senior from Edgewood, had the most goals (33) and points (53) ever by a Lynx player
  • Rachel Mirwald of Verona had the most assists ever by a Lynx player (30)

The 22-player team includes six girls from Middleton. Those players are senior forward Abby Ahlborn, junior forward Ava Jambor, junior defender Jenna Culp, sophomore forwards Maddy Ahlborn and Hannah Kasdorf, and sophomore goalie Cam McKersie.

Now, the Lynx hopes to add to its historic season with two more wins — and a state championship — this weekend.
