MIDDLETON–Sunflower Days at Pope Farm Conservancy on Old Sauk Rd. kicks off today and will run daily through August 4. Due to safety concerns, the event was cancelled last year by the Friends of Pope Farm Conservancy and revived by the Town of Middleton in 2019 after the one-year hiatus.

To address the concerns the town decided to charge admission to the event and shuttle visitors to and from the 10-plus acre sunflower field. Shuttles will run from Wisconsin Brewing Company, Verona, Middleton Firefighters Memorial Park, Middleton and Blackhawk Church, Middleton (except for Sunday), and transport visitors the short distance to the conservancy.

The event will feature two speakers:

David Drake, a UW-Madison professor and wildlife scholar of human-dominated landscapes will present “Coyotes and Red Foxes in the Suburbs” on July 28 at 4 p.m. Drake will discuss tracking of animals through the use satellite radio collars, as well as habitat, particularly in the Town of Middleton area.

Brad Kolhoff, wildlife and restoration specialist at Adaptive Resources, Mt. Horeb, will give a presentation on July 30 at 7 p.m. called, “Prairie Birthdays at Pope Farm Conservancy: A Tour of Native Sunflowers.”

There is no additional charge for attendees to join the talks. They will be held in the prairie area, near the picnic tables.

The first-ever Sunflower run/walk produced by Race Day Events begins at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 in nearby Pioneer Park and follows trails in the conservancy. Registration is $35 if completed before July 31.

Sunflower Days runs from 8 a.m.-9 p.m., July 26 through Aug. 4 at 7440 W. Old Sauk Road, Verona. Tickets cost $4 each for adults. Children 12 and under will be admitted at no charge. Admission includes free parking and shuttle rides.

Pre-sale digital tickets for the event can be purchased online. A limited number of tickets will be available on the day of the event at shuttle stop sites and entrances.
