What flies 50 miles per hour and lands effortlessly on a snowy hillside? Ski jumpers coming off of Blackhawk Ski Club’s 60 meter jump during the 66th annual tournament on Sunday, Jan. 13. 

The tournament starts at noon and will include 50 ski jumpers from Blackhawk and other Midwestern ski jumping clubs. Competitions will be held on the 5,15, 30 and 60 meter ski jumps.

Last year four of Blackhawk’s athletes qualified and participated in the Junior National competition held in Park City, Utah. Three of Blackhawk’s ski jumpers have represented the United States at the Olympics including: Dave Norby 1968, Bill Bakke 1968, and Kurt Stein 1992 and 1994.

Blackhawk Ski Club is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1947 by a group of ski jumpers. Blackhawk Ski Club has a 60-acre training facility built by the generosity of volunteers and the community to teach young people outdoor sports including: cross country skiing, alpine skiing, ski jumping, biathlon (cross country ski racing and target shooting), Nordic combined (ski jumping and cross country ski racing) and mountain biking. Each winter more than 400 young people are enrolled and active in Blackhawk ski programs. Additionally, Blackhawk, hosts an eight-week after school cross country ski program for disadvantaged youth.

The ski jumping tournament is open to the public and there is no charge to attend. Concessions will be sold.

Blackhawk Ski Club is located on Blackhawk Road beyond Pleasant View Golf Course in the Town of Middleton.
