Black Earth residents will see some utility bills increase next year, but the Village’s mill rate will remain the same at $5.48 per thousand of equalized value. As recently as 2023-24 the local mill rate was at $7.46. Significant growth in the past two years to the village’s assessed value has driven that downward rate. That growth is a byproduct of the village’s recent property reassessment.

Mazomanie’s new Public Works Director is fitting right in, and the Village Board set the 2026 mill rate at $2.34—a slight drop over last year—as they discussed and passed the budget at their November and December meetings. Village Administrator Curt Erickson also informed the board that the village had not been taking advantage of all of its levy limit, specifically in terms of debt service.

A town of Middleton man accused of trying to unlawfully change the results of the 2020 presidential election in Wisconsin was bound over for trial Monday on 11 counts of forgery.

MIDDLETON – A now resigned Middleton police officer has been indicted for allegedly coercing or enticing a minor for unlawful sexual activity, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Milwaukee.

Acting on action by two city committees, the Middleton Common Council on Dec. 16 voted to increase water rates in three categories by 3% effective Dec. 15.

During its final regularly scheduled meeting of 2025, the Middleton Common Council on Dec. 16 adopted a proclamation and heard farewell remarks regarding former alder Jim Wexler, who died Nov. 30 at the age of 74.

School security was just one of the topics on the agenda for the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District board of education at its December 15 meeting.  Safety and Security Coordinator Asher Torbeck, full-time on the job this school year, reviewed current policies in effect in the district buildings, including a new visitor sign-in system that verifies identity, facial recognition option, and software that checks a sex off

The Middleton Common Council met on December 2 for a full agenda that included a retirement proclamation, updates on major conservancy management plans, and action on routine city business ranging from election inspector appointments to sewer rate adjustments.

The Middleton Finance & Personnel Committee most recent meeting on December 2, focused on conservancy management plans, a development agreement extension, sanitary sewer rate adjustments, and an extensive presentation on potential financing strategies for the long-discussed Community Campus project.

At its December 15 regular meeting the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District will select calendars for school years 2026-2027 and 2026-2028. At the December 1 regular meeting Dr. Barb Buffington, director of employee services for the district, reviewed the two options developed by calendar the committee.
