MIDDLETON–Paul Anton Maly, 89, passed away on July 8, 2022 at Meriter Hospital in Madison. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison on May 28, 1933, the only child to Leon "Leo" John Maly and Edna Frances (Frisch) Maly.
Sadly, on April 15, 1934, Paul's father, Leo, 28, was tragically killed in a vehicle incident when he was driving north on Highway M while embarking for an early Sunday morning church service and crashed head-on into an incoming driver from Mazomanie. Paul, then 11-months young, his mother, and her younger brother, Raymond G. Frisch, were severely injured and were taken to Madison General Hospital where they were released 10 days later. It was ruled by then-Dane County coroner William E. Campbell that the fatal mishap on the wrong side of the road was an accident on Leo's part.
Following graduation in 1952 from Central High School in Madison, Paul married Kathryn Agnes Richardson on April 18, 1953 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Madison. Afterwards they spent a honeymoon in Colorado. At the time of their marriage, he was employed at Sub-Zero Freezer Co. in Madison.
After serving in the US armed forces in Korea, Paul worked delivering milk from house to house for Bowman Dairy. Then he purchased a Mobil station on Verona Road, which he operated and worked until his retirement, as well as managing a family-owned apartment building on West Dayton Street in Madison. Paul enjoyed playing golf, snowmobiling, boating on the Wisconsin River and watching the Green Bay Packers and UW-Madison Badgers.
Paul is survived by his four children, Steve, Dave, Mike, and Diane (David) Timm; his beloved grandchildren, Nicole, Bryant, Christie, Connor, Griffin, Paige, Michael, and Jacob; as well as a maternal aunt, Florence Annen, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Kathryn (Jan. 12, 2014); and his parents, Leo (April 15, 1934), and Edna (April 23, 2001); his maternal uncle, Raymond Frisch (March 18, 1999), who was the constable for the Town of Middleton for many years; his parents-in-law, Edward E. and Agnes (O'Brien) Richardson; and other aunts, uncles, and relatives.
A 2:30 p.m. visitation was held prior to a 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial service at Saint Bernard Catholic Church, 7450 University Ave., Middleton, on July 22, 2022. Interment was held at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison. A dinner was held following the service at Gunderson Funeral Home, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, which served the family.
