MADISON/VERONA–Carl Harold Reuter, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones, on September 22, 2022. He was born in Madison on July 25, 1943 to the late Russell and Frieda (Mueller) Reuter. Carl grew up in Madison and was raised in the Vilas Park area. He graduated from Central High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from UW-Platteville studying education and industrial arts followed by his master’s degree at UW-Stout. Carl started the industrial technical education program for West High. Carl was a pioneer. He was a mentor to many teens and guided them in finding their path in life. Many of these students have become lifelong friends to Carl and his family. He was a teacher at West High for 35 years.
At a dance in 1968, Carl met the love of his life, Mary Christenson. They married 51 years ago, on June 13, 1971. His daughter, Carrie Lynn, was born and raised in the house that Carl built. Carrie was the “apple of his eye.” In addition to Carrie, Carl was blessed later in life with two granddaughters, Hanah and Haley, and the “perfect son-in-law” Andy Kroening.
Carl was an incredible craftsman and woodworker. He was also very athletic and loved playing all sports including hockey, softball, and football. Carl could “swim like a fish” and enjoyed coaching swimming at West High. Carl loved being outdoors and was an avid sportsman. He surrounded himself with many fishing buddies and found his peace on the water. Carl was able to enjoy his retired years at his beautiful north woods home on the lake, which he designed and built. Many days were spent on the water in his boat or cruising the back roads in his Corvette with Mary. The lake house was a lifelong dream and an important legacy.
Carl is survived by his wife Mary and daughter Carrie Kroening, son-in-law Andy Kroening, granddaughters Hanah and Haley Kroening, siblings Linda (Rodney) Shaughnessy, Dayton (Barb) Reuter, and nieces and nephews.
We would like to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff in the Cardiac ICU at University Hospital in Madison for your compassionate care of Carl and his family.
