MENOMONEE FALLS — Becky Halverson is busy by nature.

Halverson is the head golf professional and event coordinator at Pleasant View Golf Course. She coaches Middleton’s girls golf team, and she’s working toward obtaining her PGA Class A golf certification.

Last week, Halverson was thrilled to be harried because it left little time to fret.

Halverson interviewed for Middleton’s head boys coaching position on Aug. 11, then waited a few days for the final verdict.

Much to Halverson’s delight, she was offered the position on Aug. 14 and quickly accepted. She replaces longtime MHS coach Tom Cabalka, who retired after leading the Cardinals to a WIAA Division 1 state championship in June.

“I mean, I'm definitely honored,” Halverson said. “I definitely didn't know for sure that it was going to happen. I knew I would have to go through the process, and I knew a lot of people spoke on my behalf, but you never know.”

You have to crawl before you can walk.

And the Wisconsin Heights football team spent last season crawling.

Now, the Vanguards are ready to take their first steps.

And Connor Herrling doesn’t think they’ll stop at that.

“I’m super stoked for the guys,” the Vanguards’ 23-year-old, fourth-year head coach said. “Right now we’re the laughing stock of the Ridge and Valley 8-man conference — we’re coming in bottom last, that’s what they’ve got us ranked as.

“But I don’t really believe in rankings. Right now we’re doing the exact same thing as every other team, if not harder. So I don’t see why we don’t have a shot to be number one in the conference this year.”

The Vanguards, an 8-man-format program as opposed to the traditional 11-on-11, went 1-7 in 2025 in large part because the roster was littered with inexperience.

Those players were either newcomers or spent 2024 buried on the depth chart.

For nearly 15 years, the Wisconsin Heights Community Garden has been a staple of the greater Mazomanie community. The garden’s mission is twofold: building community through gardening, educational programming and volunteering, as well as providing fresh produce to local food pantries. 

The Mazomanie Village Board heard updates on the Village’s upcoming housing study during its monthly meeting. The meeting, held on August 11, was held in a different room of the Mazomanie Village office so as to not interfere with the polling station.
