Middleton girls second at Stoughton

Middleton’s girls track and field team finished second at the 15-team Stoughton Invite on May 8.

The Cardinals’ boys were third out of 15 teams.

Sun Prairie East won the girls meet with 131.5 points, while the Cardinals were second with 77 points. Madison La Follette (67), Reedsburg (60) and Waterford (59.5) rounded out the top five.

Sun Prairie East also won the boys race with 100 points. DeForest finished second with 96.5 points, while Middleton (62), McFarland (54) and Stoughton (50) rounded out the top five.

Here are the Middleton athletes that notched top-5 finishes:

 

GIRLS

• Sofia Dergacheva was first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.89).

• Andrea Wipperfurth won the triple jump (34-10).

• Middleton’s 800-meter relay team of Andrea Wipperfurth, Lea Gancova, Abby Arnold and Noel Neuser finished first in 1:46.72.

• Sofia Dergacheva was second in the high jump (5-4).

Soccer Cardinals win two of three

Middleton’s girls soccer team won two of three games last week.

The Cardinals rolled past Madison La Follette, 10-0, on May 5 and downed Sun Prairie East, 2-0, on May 7. Middleton then fell to Kettle Moraine, 3-0, on May 8.

The Cardinals are now 8-2-4 overall and 5-1 in the Big Eight Conference.

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s week.

• Middleton 10, Madison La Follette 0 — Zoe Sharaf had three goals and two assists to power the Cardinals in a game stopped at halftime due to the mercy rule.

“Not a very eventful game other than all the goals we scored,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said.

Teagan Kadow, Annu Mundas, Amaya Rao and Brooke Lister all had a goal and an assist for MHS. Tatum Flaten, Sydney Hewuse and Katelyn Zutter all had goals, while Bea Norman, Elspeth Avery and Amy Medsker each had assists.

Black Earth Board Approves EMS Lot Purchase, Meter Upgrade

BLACK EARTH — The Black Earth Village Board approved several infrastructure and public safety related measures during its May 5 organizational meeting, including a joint purchase of property adjacent to the District 1 EMS station and a $416,000 electronic meter upgrade project.

‘Strike Out Cancer’ game is Thursday

The 12th annual Cardinals ‘Strike Out Cancer’ baseball game will be played May 7 at 5 p.m. at Sun Prairie East High School's Summit Field.

Big Eight Conference rivals Middleton and Sun Prairie dedicate an annual matchup to raising awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research.  

The game was started in 2014 by former Middleton manager Tom Schmitt and Sun Prairie skipper Rob Hamilton. The tradition has carried on under current MHS manager Brent Jorgensen and Sun Prairie East coach Jack Marchese.

Over the past 11 years, these programs have raised more than $239,000 for American Family Children's Hospital Kids Cancer Research.

“It really wraps around families in both communities who are being treated for cancer who are at our hospitals a lot and it’s just showing that support and love,” UW Health American Family Children’s Hospital Development Outreach Specialist Lori Schultz said. “I think that’s why it’s such a great time‚”

MHS golfers enjoy memorable week

The WIAA Division 1 boys state golf tournament is just more than a month away.

And Middleton has clearly established itself as the frontrunner to capture the school’s first WIAA Division 1 state championship since 2011.

The top-ranked Cardinals received a major test at the 32-team MACC Fund Invite held at Erin Hills on May 2. Middleton held off all challengers, though, and shot a 300 to edge No. 2 DePere and No. 3 Waunakee, who both shot 304.

Homestead and seventh-ranked Arrowhead tied for fourth with 306s, while No. 9 Kimberly was sixth with a 311. Oconomowoc was seventh (312), while fifth-ranked Kettle Moraine (314), Marquette (314) and Badger (315) rounded out the top-10.

In many ways this event — which also included a 32-team tournament at Lac La Belle in Oconomowoc — is far superior to the state tournament next month. Virtually all of the top teams and many of the elite golfers across the state were represented in a ‘Who’s Who’ of Wisconsin golf.

Big week for baseball Cardinals

Chase Rogers has had his share of memorable moments on the football field and baseball diamond during his stellar career at Middleton High School.

So when the senior center fielder stepped to the plate on April 30 with the winning run on second base, Rogers was eager to complete the Cardinals’ comeback from a late two-run deficit.

Rogers lined a pitch from right-hander Caden Cook to center field to score junior first baseman Madden Cleary from second base as Middleton rallied for a 4-3 walk-off victory over visiting Sun Prairie West.

Middleton also defeated West, 15-5, on April 28 and earned a sweep of the season series. The Cardinals also defeated Waunakee and Madison La Follette last week and improved to 10-4 overall, 6-2 in the Big Eight Conference.

“I was seeing the ball really, well,” said Rogers who drew a first inning walk and followed that up with a sixth inning single before his game-winning hit. “It was a great day at the plate.”

Middleton’s girls soccer team had another terrific week.

The Cardinals went 3-0-1 with a pair of Big Eight Conference wins along the way.

Middleton defeated host Madison East, 9-0, on April 28 and downed host Sun Prairie West, 4-0, on April 30. The Cardinals then downed Batvia (Ill.) on May 1 and tied Ankeny Centennial (Iowa), 2-2, on May 2, during a tournament in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Middleton is now 6-1-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big Eight Conference.

• Middleton 9, Madison East 0 — Sydney Hewuse had two goals — including the game-winner — and an assist as the Cardinals rolled past the Purgolders.

Teagan Kadow and Annu Mundas both added two goals, while Leighton Weber had a goal and three assists. Amaya Rao had a goal and an assist, while Emily Hagen had a beautiful, one-touch goal off a corner kick from Solee Rohlwing.

Zoe Sharaf added two assists and Amy Medsker had an assist.
