Mazomanie Village Board Approves Joint EMS Lot Purchase

The Mazomanie Village Board approved a proposal to join the six municipalities of District 1 in purchasing the lot neighbouring the EMS headquarters on Commercial St. While the Village had previously been interested in the property for expanding the Mazomanie Fire Department, issues with the lot’s shared driveway with District 1 and a failure to reach an agreement with the current owner has kept the one-acre property vacant.

Koeller's heroics lift Middleton past Verona

It’s rare when your No. 2 catcher is also one of your two team captains.

Then again, Brad Koeller isn't your typical reserve.

“He's earned the right to be one of our captains,” Middleton baseball Brent Jorgensen said of Koeller. “He brings energy, positivity, toughness, and all the other characteristics you'd want out of a leader on your team.”

Those qualities were in clear view on May 14.

Koeller — thrust into the lineup following an injury to standout catcher Tyler Vogt — delivered one of the biggest hits of Middleton’s season. Koeller ripped a base hit to right field scoring freshman Teddy Kalscheur with two outs in the 12th inning to propel the Cardinals to a 5-4 win over Verona in a marathon affair that lasted 3 ½ hours.

MHS golfers keep breaking records

How low can they go?

Right now, there seems to be almost no number that’s too low for Middleton’s boys golf team to hit.

The No. 1 ranked Cardinals fired a 2-over-par, 290 and won the 15-team Spartan Invite at Blackhawk Country Club on May 4.

Two days later, Middleton shattered that school record by shooting a 4-under-par, 276 at the Janesville Parker Triangular.

“It appears like the guys are peaking at a good time,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said.

That’s for sure.

SPARTAN INVITE

Middleton senior Sammy Forslund shot an eye-popping 8-under, 64. That tied the school record held by Kip Sullivan, who shot a 64 at Cold Water Canyon in Wisconsin Dells in 2019.

Forslund made six birdies and shot a 6-under, 30, on the front nine. He then fired a 2-under, 34 on the back nine during his record setting day.

Softball Cardinals are heating up

Middleton’s girls softball team had their best week of the season.

The Cardinals went 5-0 with two wins over Verona, and victories over Stevens Point, Burlington and Oregon.

Middleton improved to 13-7 overall and is 8-3 in the Big Eight Conference.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week.

• Middleton 5, Verona 0 — Sophomore Cece Smith struck out 13 and allowed just three hits to lead the host Cardinals past the Wildcats on May 5.

Smith threw strikes on 68 of her 100 pitches, walked one, allowed just one runner to reach second base and struck out the side in two different innings.

Middleton erupted for five runs in the fifth to break a scoreless tie.

Tough week for baseball Cards

It was a tough week for Middleton’s baseball team.

The Cardinals dropped two of three games, including a pair to Big Eight Conference co-leading Sun Prairie East.

The Cardinals are 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big Eight Conference. Sun Prairie East and Verona share the conference lead at 9-2, while Middleton has slipped to fifth place in the league.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week.

• Sun Prairie East 7, Middleton 2 — East raced to a 7-0 lead and rolled past host Middleton on May 5.

MHS starter Brody Kalscheur allowed seven runs (five earned) in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Middleton managed just five hits, but did get RBIs from left fielder Anthony Pelliteri and center fielder Eytan D’Onofrio.

Tennis Cardinals win two of three

Middleton’s boys tennis team won two of three meets last week.

The Cardinals won Big Eight Conference meets over Madison La Follette and Madison East by 7-0 scores on May 7 and May 5.

Middleton then dropped a 5-2 decision to Whitefish Bay on May 8.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week.

• Middleton 7, Madison La Follette 0 — The Cardinals rolled to straight set wins at all seven flights on May 7.

Cam Hosfield, Preetham Peddireddy, Tianmu Pei and Joseph Weisman cruised to singles wins. And in doubles action, the teams of Caden Cheng and Zander Endres, Lucas Bush and Ethan Yang, and Sullivan Watson and Benjamin Myers all posted wins.

• Middleton 7, Madison East 0 — The Cardinals cruised to straight set wins at each of the seven flights on May 5.

Alexander Bo, Cam Hosfield, Tianmu Pei and Joseph Weisman all notched straight set wins.

Boys lacrosse team wins three straight

Middleton’s boys lacrosse team got back on track, winning three straight games last week.

The Cardinals defeated La Crosse, 21-4, on May 4 and downed Sauk Prairie, 13-2, on May 5. Middleton then bested Appleton, 6-2, on May 9.

The Cardinals are now 10-2 this season.

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s week.

• Middleton 21, La Crosse 4 — Evan Mazur and Roan Johnson both had four first quarter goals and the Cardinals cruised to a win on May 4.

Patrick Passini added two first quarter goals and Sam Everson had another as Middleton built an 11-1 lead after one.

Luke Sheehan, Rafa Owczarek, Regin Kalscheur, Gavin Sipple and Mazur all scored again before halftime and the Cardinals stretched their lead to 16-2 by intermission.

Freddie Arp, Anderson See, and Benny Ancheta scored third quarter goals, and both Dane Bradford and Matt Sangar scored in the fourth to complete the scoring.

Middleton’s girls lacrosse lost two of three games last week.

The Cardinals dropped a 15-6 decision to Oregon on May 5 and fell to Bay Port, 12-11, in overtime on May 8.

Middleton then bounced back and defeated Kimberly, 14-4, on May 9.

Here’s a recap of those games.

• Oregon 15, Middleton 6 — Senior Sophie Eisele and sophomore Grace Metz both had two goals, but the Cardinals fell to the Panthers on May 5. Seniors Olivia Leslie and Eloise Wilde both added goals for MHS, while senior Lily Kastman had two assists and both senior Sylvie Balistreri and junior Ella Reeson had assists.

• Bay Port 12, Middleton 11 (OT) — Cardinals senior Sophia Eisele had an eye-popping seven goals, but MHS fell to the Pirates in overtime.
