Sweet 3-peat for MHS swimmers

WAUKESHA — Van Halen’s 1986 classic ‘Dreams’ blasted through the natatorium at Waukesha South High School last Saturday afternoon.

“Get higher and higher, straight up we'll climb,” Sammy Hagar screamed. “We'll get higher and higher, leave it all behind.”

It’s almost as if Middleton’s boys swimming team listened — and obeyed — Hagar’s words.

Race after race, swim after swim, Middleton put on a show. And the Cardinals left South with their third straight WIAA Division 1 state title.

Middleton finished with 273 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Verona (175). Brookfield’s co-op team (151.5), Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial (144) and the West Bend co-op (140) rounded out the top-five.

Middleton posted the largest margin of victory since 2016, when Madison Memorial won the meet by 112 points over runner-up Madison West. The Cardinals also won the fourth state title in school history, all coming since 2020.

Cardinals land No. 8 seed in postseason

All things considered, Kevin Bavery was a relatively happy man Sunday morning.

Bavery, the Cardinals boys basketball coach, has watched his team plummet in the last 10 days with three straight losses.

So when the WIAA announced postseason seeds, Bavery thought his team might be on the road from start to finish.

Instead, Middleton received the No. 8 seed and will host ninth-seeded Beloit Memorial in a regional semifinal on March 7.

“All I wanted was a home game,” Bavery said. “I was hoping for the (No.) 8, but I wasn’t sure the way we’ve played lately. So I’m pretty happy with it.”

Middleton is 13-10 and is tied for fifth place in the Big Eight Conference at 10-7. If the Cardinals win their playoff opener — and seeds hold — they’d head to top-seeded Kettle Moraine (23-0) for a regional final on March 8.

The sectional semifinals would be March 13 and the sectional finals are March 15.

Now or never for Cardinals

SUN PRAIRIE — Too little, too late.

That’s been the recent tale for Middleton’s boys basketball team.

Junior guard Jackson Guerrero’s fastbreak layup capped a furious Middleton rally from a 12-point deficit late in the second half as the Cardinals grabbed a brief lead against the host Sun Prairie West Wolves.

But West senior guard Tyler Haney countered with two free throws to help the Wolves regain the lead and eventually secure a 72-65 victory over the Cardinals in a Big Eight Conference game last Friday night.

“To be down 12 points and take a lead when the game is almost over, that’s pretty unbelievable,” Middleton coach Kevin Bavery said. “Honestly, I think we just ran out of gas because of who we needed on the floor those last three, four minutes.”

Middleton lost its third straight game and is in a free fall as the postseason nears.

Middleton trio headed to state

WAUNAKEE — The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat.

They are married to each other — the emotions of competition — so strongly that one intensifies the other.

Just ask Middleton’s Finn Grauwels, who experienced the latter a year ago and then spent the next 365 days chasing the former.

The junior 165-pounder caught it at Saturday’s WIAA Division 1 Waunakee Sectional wrestling meet, taking second place to advance to the state tournament.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” Grauwels said after winning 11-4 over Monona Grove/McFarland’s Xavier Denman to advance. “It means so much to me.

“Last year, falling a point short, it was one of the toughest points of my life. It was a big bummer. So just making it means a lot.”

The top two finishers in each weight class advance to state, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the UW Kohl Center.

Hockey Cards win regional title

Two down.

Does Middleton’s hockey team have more in it?

The Cardinals are halfway to state following a pair of impressive wins last week.

Middleton defeated Baraboo/Portage, 6-1, in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal on Feb. 18. The Cardinals then toppled Sun Prairie, 6-2, in a regional final on Feb. 20.

“I am very encouraged with how we have played in both playoff games so far,” Middleton coach Jochen Hylbert said. “I think we are peaking at the right time.”

Middleton, the No. 4 seed in the sectional, advanced to a sectional semifinal where they faced top-seeded Madison Edgewood Tuesday night. That game ended too late for inclusion in this week’s paper.

The winner of that game would face either second-seeded Verona or third-seeded Waunakee in a sectional final Saturday at 6 p.m. at Madison Ice Arena.

“Our leadership has been solid and we are staying positive,” Hylbert said. “The boys believe in themselves and their teammates.”

Ehrhardt up for Sauer Award

Middleton senior hockey standout Wyatt Ehrhardt was named one of three finalists for the eighth annual Jeff Sauer Humanitarian Award, which is presented annually to recognize good high school hockey players being great people.

They are Wyatt Ehrhardt, a senior forward from Middleton; Gretchen Gajewski, a senior forward who plays for the Hayward co-op; and George Karasek, a senior defenseman Oregon.

Ehrhardt, the Cardinals’ captain, scored 40 goals and had 72 points during the regular season. He is the president of the Key Club at Middleton, which encourages students to do community service and is one of the leaders in Middleton Meals Matter, which has raised 30,000 pounds of food and $18,000 to fight food insecurity in Middleton.

WIAA: No transgender athletes in girls sports

STEVENS POINT — The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, which oversees most high school sports in Wisconsin, announced on Feb. 19 that it is changing its policy regarding the participation of transgender athletes in girls sports.

"Today the WIAA Board of Control voted to update the organization’s policy regarding student-athlete eligibility — affirming its compliance with federal directives that only students designated as females at birth will be allowed to participate in girls competitions," Stephanie Hauser, executive director of the WIAA, said in a release. "Working in consultation with legal counsel, our Board updated this policy to ensure clarity is provided to our membership as they work to comply with new federal guidance from the White House."

The ruling follows similar actions taken recently by the NCAA, which adjusted its transgender student-athlete participation policy on Feb. 6.
