On May 4, Middleton boys golf coach Tom Cabalka stood on the 18^th green at The Club at Lac La Belle Golf and uttered words that seem prophetic now.

“We’re pretty close to putting it all together,” Cabalka said. “When we do that, we can be a really good team.”

That time came last week.

First, Middleton shot a season-low 297 and won the 20-team Spartan Invite held at Blackhawk Country Club on May 6. One day later, the Cardinals fired a 289-team score at Glen Erin in Janesville. And even though host Craig shot a 287 that day and won its own quadrangular, Cabalka and his team were thrilled with their two-day body of work.

“It was a great week for us,” Cabalka said. “All five are playing their best golf of the season. It's a great time to be reaching their potential.”

Middleton opened its week in style with a dominant performance at the Spartan Invite.

Middleton’s girls soccer team had a light — but productive — week.

Middleton rolled past visiting Sun Prairie East, 2-0, on May 10.

The Cardinals improved to 7-2-3 overall and are 3-0-2 in the Big Eight Conference heading into the homestretch.

“We easily dominated to the point of having 80% of the possession, or more,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said of the win over East. “Sun Prairie East didn't even get close to our final defending third and only had one shot on goal all game long.”

Middleton freshman Trinnity Wyttenbach opened the scoring in the first half on an assist from fellow freshman Brooke Lister.

Izzy Frantz then received a ball from her sister, Addy, wove through three East defenders and buried the second goal. 

And while Middleton controlled play throughout, it couldn't find the back of the net again.

“Even though it was shot after shot, it stayed at two goals,” Duffy said. 

Middleton’s boys tennis team went a perfect 3-0 at the Sun Prairie West Invite last weekend.

The Cardinals defeated Homestead, 4-3, on May 10. Middleton then toppled Whitefish Bay, 6-1, and defeated Nicolet, 5-2, on May 11.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ weekend:

• Middleton 4, Homestead 3 — The Cardinals earned two singles and two doubles wins and edged the Highlanders.

Middleton’s Ethan Bo defeated Homestead’s Graham Benish, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Alexander Bo defeated Ryan Contardi, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

In doubles action, Middleton’s Andy Jin and Blake Gibson pulled out a hard fought 6-1, 3-6, 10-7 win at No. 2. And at No. 3, Eric Sun and Henry Arp downed Benjamin Bremmer and Oliver Getzel, 6-2, 6-4.

• Middleton 6, Whitefish Bay 1 — The Cardinals captured all three doubles matches and three of four singles flights.

Middleton’s girls lacrosse team received the No. 3 seed in its sectional. The Cardinals now have a first round bye, then host 14^th-seeded Oak Creek in a regional semifinal on May 28.

If the Cardinals win there, they’ll face either sixth-seeded Verona/Mount Horeb or 11^th-seeded Brookfield East/Brookfield Central in a regional final on May 30.

The sectional semifinals are June 1 and the sectional finals are June 4.

“We are very excited about the postseason,” Middleton coach Alex Byers said.

Kettle Moraine/Badger is the No. 1 seed, while Muskego, Middleton, DSHA and Oregon’s co-op round out the top five seeds.

Middleton is currently 13-1 overall and ranked No. 6 in the state. The Cardinals have posted impressive wins this year over DSHA and a season sweep of Verona — a team MHS had not defeated in seven years.

Middleton senior Attacker Abby Tubbs is also fourth in the state in goals scored.
