MHS golfers win Big 8 title

The tradition dates back several years — and is as enjoyable today as it was many moons ago.

Each time Middleton’s boys golf team wins an invite, they stop for slushies on the way home.

On May 16, the Cardinals pulled into their favorite establishment for that sweet drink and this one was perhaps more gratifying than most.

Middleton fired a 308 and edged Janesville Craig by two shots to win the Big Eight Conference meet held at Evansville Golf Club. Madison Memorial (318), Verona (328) and Madison La Follette (332) rounded out the top five.

Middleton snapped Madison Memorial’s streak of two straight Big Eight Conference titles and won the league for the first time since 2021.

“It felt great to win the conference and make a trip to Kwik Trip for slushies,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said. “Evansville can be a very challenging course.”

Softball Cards roll in playoff opener

The adage ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going, is an appropriate description of Middleton junior right-hander Megan Button.

Nothing fazes Button when she steps into the circle for the Cardinals’ softball team.

On Tuesday, not even lightning — which necessitated a 68-minute break in the action — and the threat of thunderstorms kept Button from her mission.

Button was sensational in tossing a four-hit, complete game shutout to spark No. 3 seeded Middleton to a 4-0 victory over No. 14 seeded Madison West in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal prep softball game at Firefighters Memorial Park.

“She was well in command. She had everything working today,” Middleton manager Brittany Carl said of Button, who struck out 10 with just one walk. “She’s never rattled whether it’s super windy, whether it’s raining or there’s lightning.

29ers fall in season opener

PRAIRIE DU SAC – When the Middleton 29ers last won the Home Talent League championship, a youthful Drew Farrell was a bulldog on the mound and at the plate.

But while Farrell was one of the team’s rising young stars on that 2013 squad, he opened a new HTL season on Sunday as the elder statesman of the team.

“I don’t know how many years or games I’ve got left. It’s all special, and I don’t take it for granted,” said Farrell, who arrived back home on Saturday evening following a week of golfing in Ireland, but was ready to roll at game time. “I’d love, one more run. Since that 2013 championship, I think we’ve been to four or five Final Fours. We just couldn’t close the deal. Getting there is an accomplishment. I’d love to have one more shot at it.”

Although Middleton suffered a 3-2 loss to the host Sauk Prairie Twins on Sunday, Farrell said he liked what he saw from his younger teammates against the perennial league power Twins.

Soccer Cards land No. 4 seed

Cautiously optimistic.

That’s how Middleton girls soccer coach Mary Duffy feels as her Cardinals are ready to tackle the postseason.

Middleton received the No. 4 seed in its sectional and will host 13th-seeded Madison East in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Firefighter’s Park.

If the Cardinals win there and the seeds hold, they’d host fifth-seeded Verona on June 1.

The sectional semifinals are June 6 and the sectionals finals are June 8.

Kettle Moraine is the No. 1 seed in the sectional, while Madison West, Waunakee, Middleton and Verona round out the top five.

The Cardinals are coming off an impressive week in which they lost a 1-0 decision to No. 7 DSHA, routed Sun Prairie West, 6-0, and rolled past Madison Memorial, 4-1.

Middleton improved to 9-3-3 overall.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week.

Tennis Cards 2nd at Big 8 meet

Middleton’s boys tennis team finished in second place at the Big Eight Conference meet on May 15 and 16.

Madison West won the conference title with 50 points, while the Cardinals were second with 39 points. Madison Memorial (33), Verona (32) and Sun Prairie (28) rounded out the top five.

Here’s how the Cardinals fared at each flight.

SINGLES

• No. 1 — Middleton’s Ethan Bo, who finished third at the WIAA Division 1 individual state meet last year, defeated a Madison La Follette player, 6-0, 6-0, in his opening match. Bo then withdrew and didn't participate on the second day due to a family event.

• No. 2 — Alexander Bo also won his match, 6-0, 6-2, over a Janesville Craig player. Like his brother Ethan, though, Alexander withdrew before Day 2 for a family function.

Cardinals Strikeout Cancer game eclipses $200,000

The 10th annual ‘Strikeout Cancer’ baseball game between Middleton and Sun Prairie on May 16 raised $23,100 for pediatric cancer research. The event — which was started in 2015 by former Middleton manager Tom Schmitt and former Sun Prairie skipper Rob Hamilton — has now raised more than $200,000 for American Family Children's Hospital Kids Cancer Research.

Schmitt and Hamilton are no longer managing, but current skippers Brent Jorgensen (Middleton) and Jack Marchese (Sun Prairie) have done yeoman’s work keeping this game going.

This year, Middleton honored Lauren Droste, a Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Middleton High School.

Droste discovered she had metastatic breast cancer on Dec. 23, 2021 at just 28-years-old.

Report from the May 2024 School Board Meeting

The decision about the new literacy/biliteracy curriculum that will be in place in Middleton/Cross Plains Area School District classrooms in the fall was announced at the May 13 school board meeting. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Silvia Romero-Johnson said the committee had selected two Savvas products for K-8 students.  Director of Secondary Education Keith Schneider, a member of the 25-member committee, said that typically the selection of a new curriculum stretches out over many months if not years but that the schedule was truncated due to the passage of Act 20 in the Wisconsin Assembly last July.

O'Connor, MHS down No. 1 East

SUN PRAIRIE — Bennett O’Connor was a little worried.

As Middleton’s standout junior pitcher readied for the biggest start of his young life — a battle with No. 1 and unbeaten Sun Prairie East on May 14 — O’Connor couldn't find a groove.

“During my warmups, I did not feel the greatest,” O’Connor said. “I thought it was going to be not-so-good of a game.”

Apparently, warm-ups can be deceiving.

O’Connor hurled a gem, holding the visiting Cardinals to just one run in 6 2/3 innings, and Middleton notched its biggest win of the year with a 2-1 victory over East.

O’Connor struck out six, didn't walk anyone, allowed six hits and threw strikes on 62.5% of his pitches. Kevin Sheehan came on to record the final out as Middleton (14-9 overall, 10-6 in the Big Eight) handed East (21-1, 15-1) its first loss of the year.
