Middleton pilot who helps rescue dogs featured on PBS

The tenth season of Wisconsin Life on PBS Wisconsin offers plenty to get excited about. Host Angela Fitzgerald connects viewers with people whose passions, experiences and expertise celebrate the best of Wisconsin, introducing new stories from every corner of our state. And this season has a very local highlight.

Middleton pilot David Tan was featured in an all-new episode of Wisconsin Life, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 on PBS Wisconsin. The episode is now available to stream at pbswisconsin.org/WILife and on the free PBS video app on all streaming devices and Smart TVs.

Originally from Singapore, Tan learned to fly while attending boarding school in England. He went on to join the Singapore Air Force and flew rescue helicopters. These days, his rescue missions look a little different. He works with Pilots N Paws, an organization that matches aviators with animals in need of rescue from natural disasters or overcrowded shelters.

Public, alders, trade dueling narratives over land use amendment

After over two hours of discussion, the Middleton Common Council voted 7-1 to approve the first reading of an amendment to the Future Land Use (FLU) Map, which would designate the western half of 2159 Allen Blvd as “avenue mixed-use” and the eastern half, which borders single-family homes, as “established neighborhood.”

Plots designated as avenue mixed-use could be used for “wide range of indoor and outdoor retail, service, office, institutional, and residential uses outside of the downtown area,” according to city documents. “These are generally larger and/or more intensive than business in the Neighborhood Mixed Use category.”

Middleton's boys spikers make history

GREEN BAY — Brody Stuttgen hammered home the biggest point of his life, and pandemonium quickly ensued.

Ambrose Engling pulled a Forrest Gump and started running to nowhere in particular. Caden Van Buren and Stuttgen collapsed to the ground, and a horde of Middleton boys volleyball players quickly engulfed them. And over on the sideline, the calm, steady coaching staff embraced, knowing this remarkable journey was now complete.

Middleton’s boys volleyball team made history last Saturday — coming to what’s affectionately known as Titletown and bringing home the first state championship in school history.

Middleton, the No. 1 seed at the state tournament, outlasted second-seeded Hartland Arrowhead in a memorable championship match that took 2 hours, 15 minutes to decide.

Soccer Cardinals hoist gold ball

MILWAUKEE — One way or another, a drought was going to end on Saturday evening.

The Middleton boys soccer team was making its first appearance in a WIAA Division 1 state championship match since 2004 when the Cardinals brought home their first — and only — state title. Brookfield East meanwhile — after being ranked first in the state and at one point ranked fifth nationally this season — was making its return to the championship game after falling to crosstown rival Brookfield Central in 2019. The Spartans last won it all in 2014.

Both teams were long overdue for a title — and one of them finally brought home the gold ball.

The state championship was ultimately decided on penalty kicks, as Middleton sophomore Brennan Mauer sent the winning goal sailing past the outstretched arms of East sophomore goalkeeper Will Slawinski to give the Cardinals a 1-1 (4-2) victory in the final game of the season.

MHS cruises into state finals

GREEN BAY — Middleton’s boys volleyball got what it wanted.

Then the Cardinals made the most of it.

During Middleton’s brilliant season, it lost just three matches — including one to Kimberly. So as the Cardinals watched the Papermakers and the Waukesha Fusion battle in a state quarterfinal match last Thursday — knowing they’d play the winner in the semifinals — they quietly pulled for Kimberly.

Middleton got the matchup it desired, as Kimberly edged the Fusion in five sets. Then the Cardinals got a measure of revenge, cruising past Kimberly, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18, at the Resch Center last Friday.

Middleton, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, improved to 32-3 and reached the state championship match for the first time in school history. Kimberly, the No. 4 seed, finished its season 34-8.

Middleton rolls by Union Grove

GREEN BAY — In the classic 1980s video game ‘Donkey Kong’, the character Mario must climb a series of ladders to rescue his girlfriend Pauline as a giant Gorilla throws barrels at him.

When it comes to the state tournament, Middleton’s boys volleyball program has felt like Mario for years now. Only the Cardinals have had no luck dodging Donkey Kong’s barrels.

Last Thursday, the Cardinals finally got that pesky Gorilla off their backs.

Middleton, the No. 1 seed at state, cruised to a 25-11, 25-17, 25-12 win over eighth-seeded Union Grove in a quarterfinal match held at the Resch Center. The Cardinals improved to 30-3 on the season and won their first match at state since 2008.

“It’s really surreal,” said senior opposite Ambrose Engling, a Princeton recruit. “It’s really cool that we get to make this story our own and prove what we’re capable of.”

Middleton tops Marquette, advances to finals

MILWAUKEE — Just one baby.

That’s all Middleton boys soccer coach Kevin Pauls asked from keeper Mikey Fussell during the WIAA Division 1 state semifinals at Uihlein Soccer Park last Friday.

The Cardinals and state power Milwaukee Marquette headed to a shootout, where each team received five penalty kicks. And Pauls told Fussell if he could stop one of the Hilltoppers’ five attempts, he believed Middleton would advance.

“If we make all ours and I stop one, we’re solid,” Fussell said.

They were.

Fussell stopped the third of Marquette’s five tries, while Middleton went a perfect 5-for-5 on its kicks. Fussell’s heroics gave the Cardinals a 5-4 win on penalty kicks in a game that officially finished in a 1-1 tie.

“You have confidence that your five are going to nail it and ours did,” Pauls said. “And you ask for a save. And if you get more than one — awesome.”

MHS swimmers hope to capture gold

Middleton co-captains Tait Haag and Lily Mair are looking forward to closing out their high school swimming careers with several trips to the awards podium this weekend.

The dynamic duo, along with fellow senior Piper Garcia Hall, would like nothing better than to bring home another team trophy to the school when they compete at the WIAA Division 1 state swimming and diving meet at Waukesha South Natatorium on Saturday.

After Middleton’s boys soccer and boys volleyball teams were crowned as state champions last Saturday, could the girls swimming and diving team be next?

“The majority of the work’s done, and we’re just kind of focused together,” said Haag, a University of Kansas recruit. “We all have the same goal. We all want to perform well at the state meet. We all want to see each other perform well. This week is just about having fun and being there for one another.”

Mair agreed.

MHS swimmers shine at sectionals

Middleton’s girls swimming and diving team sets some pretty lofty goals most years.

Last Saturday, the Cardinals checked two of them off their list when they hosted a WIAA Division 1 sectional.

Middleton won the 400-meter freestyle relay to rally past Verona in the meet’s final event and edged the Wildcats for the sectional title.

Senior Lily Mair, junior Audrey Alexander, freshman Brynn Sundell, and senior Tait Haag touched the wall in 3 minutes, 31.59 seconds, just 0.64 ahead of runner-up Oregon (3:32.23). Verona finished third (3:32.58).

“Verona is a great team, and they swam well today,” said Haag, a co-captain who will be making her fourth straight appearance at state. “But we had a great day. I’m so proud of the girls. We’re excited for state.”
