Middleton hopes to shine at sectionals

Twelve months ago, Middleton’s boys basketball team walked into Oconomowoc High School needing just two wins to reach the state tournament.

The gym was packed. The tension was palpable. And the Cardinals’ opponent made sure it was a long night for Middleton.

Brookfield Central — which eventually finished second at state — outplayed the Cardinals from start to finish and rolled to a 57-39 win.

“The atmosphere was crazy ... and we didn’t play very well,” Middleton senior point guard Gavyn Hurley. “We’ve got to go and get the job done.”

If things go according to plan, Middleton will end up at Oconomowoc High School again Saturday night with a chance to reach the state tournament for the first time in 25 years.

Middleton marches into sectionals

Kevin Bavery heard the chatter.

Maybe his Middleton boys basketball team had piqued too early, some had claimed. Others said the Cardinals might be poised for a playoff letdown.

“Sometimes you get a little Chicken Little going on, like the sky is falling,” Bavery said.

Well, the sky fell on Saturday night. It just wasn't on Middleton.

The Cardinals gave a memorable defensive performance, put three players in double figures and toppled Madison Memorial, 53-38, in a WIAA Division 1 regional final.

Middleton, the No. 2 seed in the sectional, improved to 25-1 and will face sixth-seeded Milwaukee Hamilton (20-6) in a sectional semifinal at Sun Prairie East Thursday at 7 p.m. Tenth-seeded Memorial, which had won nine of 10 entering the game, finished the year 16-9.

Middleton's Hurley a finalist for Mr. Basketball

Middleton boys basketball star Gavyn Hurley is one of six finalists for the prestigious Mr. Basketball Award.

Hurley, a 6-foot-6 point guard, becomes the first finalist for the award in school history.

Hurley was named the Player of the Year in the Big Eight Conference for the second straight season on Wednesday.

Hurley leads Middleton in scoring (19.6), rebounding (8.0) and is second in assists (3.0). Hurley’s terrific year helped the Cardinals go 23-1 in the regular season — the best record in school history — and win the Big Eight Conference with a 19-1 mark.

“He’s arguably the best player I’ve ever coached,” Middleton coach Kevin Bavery said of Hurley. “He’s right up there with three or four other people.

“He’s in some great company for this award. I know there’s some clear favorites, but it’s an incredible honor just to be nominated.”

Middleton's boys win Big 8 title

When the basketball season begins, teams across the state gather and outline a lengthy list of goals.

In some cities, these objectives are far-fetched.

In others, those dreams eventually become reality.

In Middleton, it’s been the latter.

“This is a historic season,” senior wing Kaden Fosdick said. “And we’re just taking advantage of that and celebrating it every chance we can get.”

The latest chance to celebrate came Feb. 21, when the Cardinals edged Verona, 76-70, in overtime and claimed the outright Big Eight Conference championship.

Middleton went on to defeat Janesville Parker, 62-53, last Saturday and toppled Janesville Craig, 76-63 Monday. Those wins helped the Cardinals finish the regular season with a 23-1 record — which was the best in school history — and a 19-1 mark in the conference.

MHS girls drop playoff opener

It hurt.

But that’s not how members of Middleton’s girls basketball team will remember their 2022-23 season.

Especially the seniors.

They’ll remember this campaign for a whole lot more than Friday night’s heartbreaking 61-48 loss to Sussex Hamilton in the WIAA Division 1 regional semifinals.

“I think our chemistry and the way we all got along with each other. I’m really going to miss that,” said senior Audrey Deptula, a 6-foot-1 guard destined for NCAA Division I Loyola University Chicago in the fall. “We spent up to four hours a day with each other and we never got sick of each other.

“That bond is something I’m going to really miss.”

Fellow senior Addy Gmur, a 5-11 forward, agreed.

Falk enjoys big weekend at state

MADISON – Competing in wrestling is not for the faint-hearted.

That is a lesson Middleton co-captain Bryce Falk fully embraced as his junior season came to a close at the Kohl Center last weekend.

Making his state tournament debut, Falk battled elbow, rib and shoulder injuries to earn a spot on the awards podium with a sixth-place finish at 170 pounds at the WIAA Division 1 individual state tournament.

“I’m definitely happy I was able to place my first year at state,” said Falk, who also won Big Eight Conference, regional and sectional titles this season. “It’s been a big accomplishment for me. It’s always great to place at state, but making it is a big accomplishment, too.”

Falk said walking into the Kohl Center as a competitor instead of as a spectator was “pretty overwhelming to see how big it was and knowing I was going to compete here.”

However, Falk said he didn’t let his emotions get to him.

Papenthien captures silver at state

MADISON – When the WIAA unveiled its inaugural individual wrestling girls state tournament at the La Crosse Center a year ago, then Middleton junior Mattie Papenthien was a local trailblazer for girls wrestling.

The lone Middleton wrestler to compete in either the boys or girls state tournaments, Papenthien finished fourth at 132 pounds to become the first girls wrestling place-winner in school history.

But Papenthien had some company when she qualified for the second girls state tournament that moved to the Kohl Center to run in conjunction with the annual boys state tournament last weekend.

Her dreams of winning a state championship were dashed in the 138-pound state championship match on Saturday evening and she settled for a runner-up finish.

Joining Papenthien as a place-winner was senior Jessica Bristol, who was sixth at 132 pounds and finished with a 15-5 record, while senior Katrina Clark made her debut at 185 pounds.

Hockey Cardinals ousted by Edgewood

The devil is in the details.

Especially when the postseason arrives.

And that’s why Middleton hockey coach Dan Truehl believes his Cardinals are now watching instead of skating.

Host Madison Edgewood scored three goals in a 6-minute window in the second period on Feb. 21 and toppled Middleton, 3-1, in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal.

The third-seeded Cardinals ended their terrific season with a 17-9 record. Second-seeded Edgewood improved to 16-8-2, then lost to top-seeded Verona in a sectional final on Feb. 24.

“These games are always decided in the small details,” Truehl said. “And we lost our mojo for a few minutes in the second (period), which ultimately led to another close loss.”

Middleton played an outstanding first period and grabbed a 1-0 lead just 4 minutes in when Brady Engelkes scored a power play goal. Both Ethan Lam and Charlie Jambor assisted on the play.
