Iris C. Brunner

CROSS PLAINS–Iris C. Brunner, 92, of Cross Plains, died on Jan. 8, 2023, after a very brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Nov. 9, 1930, in Blue River. She was the daughter of Harley and Alma (McKinney) Couey. She graduated from Blue River High School in 1948 and set off for the big city of Madison. On Mar. 27, 1951, she married her love, Gerald Brunner, from Cross Plains. Together they chose to make their home in Cross Plains where they owned Brunner’s Store, whose motto was “Pleasing you, Pleases us.” Those words were how she lived her life even after they sold the store in 1976.

In addition to helping run the store, Mom was busy raising eight children. When the kids were older, Mom worked several jobs including Lands’ End for all 17 years they had a call center in Cross Plains, retiring only when they closed in 2005.

Extra FoodShare Benefits to End in February, Pantries Already Overwhelmed

UNITED STATES–The Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, passed by Congress in late December, ends a federal program that has been providing additional benefits to households enrolled in Wisconsin’s FoodShare program. FoodShare households have been receiving the maximum amount for their household size or $95, whichever is more. In recent months, an average of approximately $80 million has been distributed monthly to help almost 400,000 households across our state struggling to afford food. This also indirectly supports Wisconsinites involved in food production and retail like farmers, truckers, and grocers. February 2023 will be the last month families will receive the extra benefits. Regular FoodShare benefits will continue.

Plan Commission Approves Petition to DOT for Airport Improvements

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved a resolution recommending the common council petition the Wisconsin Secretary of Transportation for airport improvement aid. The financial assistance would be used for design engineering and reconstruction of the primary runway and taxiway.

The Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics requires airport sponsors to submit a petition identifying potential projects seeking state or federal funding assistance. In October 2022, the airport commission recommended adding to the petition that the city previously filed in January 2022 to include design engineering and reconstruction of the primary runway and taxiway. None of the projects would expand the footprint or the capacity of the airport and the city is not obligated to proceed with any of the projects.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Results In

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Police Department (MIPD) is making progress towards safer roads to start the new year. MIPD just wrapped up participation in the statewide and national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday campaign. Officers made five OWI arrests between Dec. 16, 2022 and New Year’s Day.

While the focus of the initiative was to eliminate impaired driving, officers also issued citations and made arrests during traffic stops for the following:

• Fifteen speeding violations

• Three operating after revocation or suspension violations

• One safety belt violation

• One drug arrest

• One felony arrest

“This enforcement campaign allowed us to spread the word to the community that impaired driving is never acceptable,” Sergeant Jessica Quamme said. “Although this campaign is over, it is an essential message that continues throughout the year. Always plan for a safe ride home to save lives on the roads.”

MIPD Searching for Mail Thieves

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Police Department (MIPD) obtained this image from surveillance video from the overnight hours of Jan. 15 at a local business in the industrial park. The passenger in this vehicle got out and took mail from the mailbox and left. He is described as a white male wearing a North Face jacket and shorts.

If you recognize this vehicle or know anything about this crime, please contact Middleton Police at 608-824-7300 or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014 or on the web at p3tips.com. Please mention MIPD case # MI23000939.

The MIPD has seen an increase of mail being taken from businesses in the industrial park. It appears suspects are looking for checks to steal, forge and cash. We would like to remind business owners to follow some of these tips to help protect themselves:

• Promptly pick up mail

• Deposit mail close to pick up time

Middleton rolls past Verona

Gavyn Hurley pays virtually no attention to the state rankings every week.

Seriously.

“I don’t even know where we’re at,” said Hurley, a standout guard on Middleton’s boys basketball team. “I know we’re pretty high up and that’s cool. But really, it doesn’t mean anything yet.”

Hurley is right on all counts.

What it does mean, though, is that Middleton is playing sensational basketball. And it’s why the Cardinals have jumped to No. 2 in the latest Wissports.net poll.

Middleton routed Verona, 71-53, last Saturday during the Martin Luther King Big Eight Conference Showcase held at MHS. The Cardinals improved to 11-0 overall and are 9-0 in the Big Eight Conference, which gives them a three-game lead in the league over four different teams.

MHS rallies by Sun Prairie West

It’s a given that the Middleton’s boys basketball team is going to get its opponents’ ‘A’ game night in and night out.

Case in point: the Sun Prairie West Wolves might be in their first year as a program, but they put a scare into the highly ranked and unbeaten Middleton last Thursday night.

The Wolves jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first half and provided the Cardinals with one of their toughest tests of the season.

But Middleton tightened up its defense and used a double-double from senior guard Gavyn Hurley to eventually tame the Wolves, rallying for a 70-64 victory in a Big Eight Conference thriller.

Hurley finished with a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds, while senior wing Kaden Fosdick chipped in 10 points and a game-high eight assists to help the Cardinals — ranked third in both the wissports.net and Associated Press Division 1 polls — improve to 10-0 overall, including a league-leading 8-0 mark in conference play.

Deptula, Cardinals rout Spartans

VERONA — Senior co-captain Audrey Deptula is a proven scorer for Middleton’s girls basketball team.

But last Saturday night, Deptula took her game to a whole new level.

Deptula, a University of Loyola Chicago recruit, scored a career-high 39 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to help Middleton overpower Madison Memorial, 78-47, in a Big Eight Conference matchup and the final game of the 2023 MLK Showcase hosted by Verona High School.

The scoring explosion didn’t surprise Deptula’s teammates.

“She is very much a leader,” said senior Addy Gmur, who is a team co-captain along with Deptula and junior Kenzie Zimmerman. “When Audrey’s scoring and is on, it pushes everyone else to go for it and succeed. She’s an inspiration. She’s an all-around player. She’s a defender, rebounds, and gets assists, too.”

Added Zimmerman: “When she gets hot, you can’t stop her. Anywhere on the court, she can score. It’s awesome to see.”

Swimmers win Middleton Relays

Middleton High School was a circus Saturday afternoon.

On one side of the building, fans poured in to watch a bevy of boys basketball games as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Showcase.

On the other end, Middleton’s boys swimming team was putting on a show of its own.

Middleton hosted the 10-team Cardinal Relays and left everyone several laps behind.

Middleton won seven of 11 events and finished with 241 points, while Madison West was a distant second (194). Madison Memorial (158), Sun Prairie East (105) and Verona (101) rounded out the top five.

“I was happy to see high energy both in and out of the pool,” Middleton first-year coach Wes Lagerhausen said. “It created some exciting comebacks and hold-off victories for the team.”

Middleton’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Jackson Esteves, Noah Dorn, Espen Morner and Nick Chirafisi finished first, while the foursome of Kyler Mahoney, Miles Wagener, Ben Freiberg and Jesse Mai was ninth.
