Soccer Cards earn No. 1 seed

It’s been six years since Middleton’s boys soccer team reached the WIAA Division 1 state tournament.

But the Cardinals are perfectly positioned to return to the state tournament later this month.

Middleton received the No. 1 seed in its sectional and will now try making a run at state.

“In the playoffs anything can happen and it's especially hard to beat rivals twice in the same year,” Middleton coach Kevin Pauls said. “So our path is not easy, but we're ready for the challenge.”

Middleton opens the postseason by hosting 16th-seeded Janesville Parker in a regional semifinal game on Oct. 18. If the Cardinals win there, they’ll host either eighth-seeded Badger or ninth-seeded Kettle Moraine in a regional final on Oct. 22.

The sectional semifinals are Oct. 27 and the sectional finals are Oct. 29.

Madison Memorial is the No. 2 seed in the sectional, while Verona, Madison West and Waunakee round out the rest of the top five seeds.

Tennis Cards storming to state

This sectional championship didn’t come because of one or two flights.

It didn’t happen thanks to one or two memorable performances.

No, this was a total team effort.

Middleton’s girls tennis team rolled to a championship at the La Crosse Central Sectional on Oct. 5. The Cardinals finished with 48 points and easily outdistanced runner-up Madison West (36) and the rest of the 17-team field.

Middleton earned a trip to the WIAA Division 1 state team tournament on Oct. 21-22. The Cardinals also sent singles players Netra Somasundaram, Sonya Agapov and Lydia Sabat, and their top two doubles team of Ashley Andler/Amy Li and Keena Cheng/Sarah Li to the individual state tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Girls spikers close in on title

The environment was hostile.

The opponent was impressive.

But Middleton’s girls volleyball team was certainly up to the challenge.

The Cardinals defeated host Verona, 3-1, on Oct. 6 in a Big Eight Conference showdown. Middleton then bested Janesville Craig, 3-0, on Oct. 8.

The Cardinals now lead the Big Eight with a 7-0 record, one game ahead of second-place Verona (6-1). Middleton traveled to Madison East Tuesday and then was at Sun Prairie East Thursday, and with a pair of wins, the Cardinals would claim an outright Big Eight title for the second straight year.

“This week was a good one for us,” Middleton coach Maddie Vogel said. “We were coming off of a pretty long break in games, so we were a little rusty coming out of the gate. Once we found our rhythm in serve receive, we were able to execute really well on third contact.”

Boys spikers top Spartans

Middleton’s boys volleyball team has owned the Big Eight Conference for a decade now.

That streak wasn’t in great peril on Oct. 3. But it was tested.

Middleton defeated visiting Madison Memorial, 22-25, 25-8, 25-16, 25-20, and in the process clinched at least a share of its 10th straight conference title. The Cardinals also pushed their conference winning streak to a remarkable 87 games.

Middleton could clinch an outright conference title Monday when it met Fort Atkinson (0-6 in the league).

“The (Memorial) match was a good one,” Middleton coach Rob Kleinschmidt said. “I'm very proud of the way the boys responded to adversity in the first set.”

During Middleton’s remarkable conference winning streak, it’s rarely lost a set. But the Spartans certainly surprised the Cardinals when they won the opening set, 25-22.

Middleton answered in a big way, though, outscoring the Spartans, 75-44, the rest of the way.

MHS runners fare well at Wisco Invite

Middleton’s cross country teams competed at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invite on Oct. 6.

The Cardinals’ girls finished in seventh place out of 15 teams, while Middleton’s boys were eighth out of 21 teams.

Wisconsin Lutheran won the boys race with 43 points, while Verona was second at 48. Kettle Moraine (134), West Bend West (138) and Wauwatosa East (148) rounded out the top five.

Middleton finished in eighth place with 260 points.

“We rested our top eight runners and prepared for the conference meet,” Middleton coach Brian Finnel said. “So, this was a great opportunity for our next wave of guys, most of which return next year.

“We had eight and six are coming back next year. With a heavy senior varsity squad it's nice to see how we stack up against others. Finishing eighth I think is a great confidence booster and it's a nice stepping stone for most of these guys to get varsity experience before they find themselves in that position next year.”

Swimmers third at Beloit Invite

How deep is Middleton’s girls swimming team?

The Cardinals had many of their top swimmers rest last Saturday instead of going to the Beloit Invite. And Middleton still took third place at the 14-team invitational.

Verona won the meet with 736 points, whole Badger was second at 508. Middleton (374), Hononegah (Ill.) (294) and Sun Prairie East (254) rounded out the top five.

“Once again we had our top girls rest,” said Middleton coach R.J. Leiferman, who’s making sure his team is rested for the upcoming postseason. “That let some of our other girls get a chance to race, and we still managed to finish third.”

Middleton’s foursome of Maddie Dorris, Sophia Walker, Annika Diny and Amber Haack was fourth in the 100-yard medley relay, while the quartet of Lainie Laszewski, Elaina Phaneuf, Aoife Ryan-Kaiser and Lydia Keebler was seventh.

Evers Announces $40 Million to Expand Access to High-Speed Internet Across Wisconsin

MADISON–Gov. Tony Evers announced that the US Department of the Treasury (Treasury) has approved the governor’s plans to allocate $40 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds through the Capital Projects Fund to expedite Wisconsin’s efforts to expand access to high-speed internet across the state.

“Whether it’s finding work, running a business, going to school, or just staying connected to friends and family, high-speed internet is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity,” said Evers. “I’ve been proud to use our investments since 2019 to provide more than 387,000 homes and businesses with high-quality, high-speed internet, and we’re not slowing down anytime soon. The digital divide is holding our families, communities, economy, and our state back, so I’m glad to direct this funding that will help ensure we can continue building on the progress we’ve made over the last three years.”

Paul A. Maly

MIDDLETON–Paul Anton Maly, 89, passed away on July 8, 2022 at Meriter Hospital in Madison. He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison on May 28, 1933, the only child to Leon "Leo" John Maly and Edna Frances (Frisch) Maly.

Sadly, on April 15, 1934, Paul's father, Leo, 28, was tragically killed in a vehicle incident when he was driving north on Highway M while embarking for an early Sunday morning church service and crashed head-on into an incoming driver from Mazomanie. Paul, then 11-months young, his mother, and her younger brother, Raymond G. Frisch, were severely injured and were taken to Madison General Hospital where they were released 10 days later.
