Know Your Dollar Teaches Middle Schoolers Financial Literacy

MIDDLETON–A course in financial literacy has taken off in Middleton and Madison and teaches middle school students about managing money at an early age.

Know Your Dollar (KYD) was started by Middleton high School senior Jahnvi Datta when she was a sophomore in 2021 and she began implementing the program in the 2021-2022 school year. She said that she targeted middle school students because they are at an age when they are beginning to form money habits.

KYD is offered at middle schools, community centers and camps, Datta said, and she developed the curriculum because she saw a need during the pandemic. “During the pandemic, I could see that the effects of it were not strictly medical. There were financial impacts too that were causing anxiety for people all around me and I felt that financial literacy education was a huge need,” she said.

Plan Commission Reviews Proposal for Winery & Restaurant, Wheel & Sprocket Expansion

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission reviewed a concept proposal for Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant which would replace Tanner’s Bar and Grill and Maurice’s clothing store in Greenway Station. The plan commission also approved the design of the proposed expansion of Wheel and Sprocket bike shop on University Avenue which would replace the former Chocolaterian Cafe.

City of Middleton Associate Planner Daphne Xu explained to the plan commission that Cooper’s Hawk would consolidate the spaces currently occupied by Tanner's Bar & Grill and Maurice’s. The applicant is requesting feedback on the concept prior to seeking design approval in October, Xu said.

Representative of Cooper’s Hawk Lauren Williams said, if approved, this would be the business’s second location in Wisconsin. The other location is in Brookfield.

Williams summarized the operations of the business.

District Electors Adopt Tax Levy

MIDDLETON – Electors in the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District Monday adopted a 2023 tax levy that would conditionally increase by 4.04 percent and bump taxes on a $400,000 house by $159.

The adopted tax levy is subject to adjustment by the Board of Education in October after the state verifies total student enrollment, certifies the amount of financial aid to the district and the equalized property valuations, Board Member Sheila Hibner, said in opening remarks.

By statute, school districts are required to hold an annual budget hearing and allow voters to approve tax levies to fund capital and operational expenditures. Although a 1993 state law that limits the amount of revenue a school district can raise from taxes and state aid exerts a large influence in those decisions, Jerrud Rossing, assistant superintendent of operations said after the meeting.

Middleton, Falk run over Craig

JANESVILLE — Middleton football coach Jason Pertzborn was finishing up some business inside Janesville’s Monterey Stadium late Friday when the host school turned out the lights.

Perhaps that was apropos, considering the Cardinals had just finished turning out the lights on the Cougars.

Junior running back Bryce Falk had a brilliant night with four rushing touchdowns and 244 yards on 33 carries. Middleton’s offensive line was sensational and an ever-improving defense bent, but rarely broke.

The result was a dominant 35-7 Middleton win that kept the Cardinals in contention for a Big Eight Conference title and perhaps a home game when the postseason arrives next month.

“I think we’re starting to put the pieces together at the right time,” Falk said. “The last few weeks of practice have been going really smoothly and that’s what’s helped us — is that practices have been going a lot smoother. I really like what we’re doing.”

Middleton routs Madison Memorial

Every game for playoff-minded teams during a nine-week high school football regular season is important, but some have just a little more urgency to them than others.

For Middleton, saddled with a 1-3 record and coming off a heartbreaking loss to Verona a week earlier, last Friday’s Big Eight Conference contest against unbeaten Madison Memorial was one of them.

The Cardinals came through in a big way.

Quarterback Gabe Passini flashed his big arm, showcased his running ability and finished with four touchdowns in all, leading Middleton to a 45-21 victory that breathed life back into not just the Cardinals’ playoff hopes — but their conference title hopes as well.

“They were a little frustrated,” Middleton coach Jason Pertzborn said of his team’s season being on the brink following a 13-7 loss to Verona in which the Wildcats were able to win thanks to a pair of field goals in the final 6 minutes, 16 seconds that broke a 7-7 tie.

State hockey coming to Middleton

The WIAA boys and girls state hockey tournaments are moving to Middleton.

The WIAA Board of Control approved an Executive Staff recommendation on Sept. 16 to move the tournaments to Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena effective in March, 2023.

The WIAA and Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena agreed to a two-year term.

“There is tremendous history with the state tournament in Madison, so I’m glad that it’s staying in the area,” Middleton High School coach Dan Truehl said. “We have aspirations of being one of the final four teams left standing in March and the thought of having two more ‘home games’ is something that our boys are very excited about.”

Built in 1999, the venue received a multi-million dollar renovation in 2018 that added significant amenities and upgrades. The facility is equipped with two full sheets of ice with seating for 2,611 spectators, a state-of-the-art sound system, scoreboard and a high-definition video board.

Golfers win Janesville Invite

The Janesville Parker Invite is always one of the state’s elite girls golf events.

And this year was no different.

The top three teams and four of the top seven in Division 1 were on hand. And the No. 2 team in Division 2 was also present.

That’s why Middleton’s championship on Saturday was so impressive.

The third-ranked Cardinals fired a 308 and edged runner-up and No. 7 Waunakee (311) for the title at the 20-team invite. No. 2 Union Grove was third with a 313, while No. 1 Westosha Central was fourth (323) and Brookfield Central was fifth (331).

We really enjoyed watching the girls play at Janesville Riverside,” Middleton coach Becky Halverson said. “They just keep building on the past and they performed well against some strong teams.”
