Football Cardinals have great expectations

Nine months ago, Jackson Mefford walked off the field in Sun Prairie dejected, disheartened, doleful.

Mefford and his Middleton football team had just fallen to Sun Prairie in Level 3 of the WIAA Division 1 playoffs. And if that loss wasn’t bad enough, Mefford had a sobering thought as he left the field.

“I thought to myself, this was going to be the best team I ever played on at Middleton,” said Mefford, now a senior offensive lineman.

That seemed like a reasonable belief.

The 2021 Cardinals reached Level 3 of the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Middleton finished second in the rough and tumble Big Eight Conference.

And even though Middleton’s season ended against eventual state runner-up Sun Prairie, MHS experienced a joyride many weren’t sure could be repeated.

Today, Mefford has a different outlook.

Middleton's defense could be dominant

Brad Rogeberg knows he’s been dealt a terrific hand.

Middleton’s defensive coordinator has had years where he’s missing a card here or there.

That won’t be the case in 2022.

“If we have to go big, we can go as big as we need to,” Rogeberg said. “And if we play a team that spreads us out and throws the ball all over the place, we can adjust to that, too.

“We’ve got a lot of players and a lot of options. On paper, the kids have worked really hard and are doing good things. It could be a special group.”

Middleton, which opens its season by hosting Bay Port on Aug. 18, seemingly has standouts all over the field.

Junior outside linebacker Sam Pilof holds four NCAA Division 1 scholarship offers and is quickly becoming one of the most heavily recruited players in school history. Gus Wenning was an all-region defensive end last year and moves to inside linebacker where he could be a terror.

Groy returns to help Middleton's offense

Ryan Groy is one of the finest football players to ever don a Middleton uniform.

The 2009 MHS graduate went on to have a stellar career at the University of Wisconsin, then played for six teams during a seven-year career in the National Football League.

Today, Groy is back in the area and trying to help Middleton’s offense reach new heights.

Groy, a volunteer assistant, spent much of the offseason helping tweak various parts of the Cardinals’ offense. Early on in fall practices, the results have been noticeable.

“Groy is a stud,” Middleton defensive coordinator Brad Rogeberg said. “What we’re doing now with Ryan is night and day. We were pretty basic, I’m not going to lie. But he’s helped change our offense. We’re going to be a lot more unpredictable.”

Kind calls it a career at MHS

As Jeff Kind mowed his lawn in past summers, he would think about the upcoming basketball season the entire time.

Who would his starters be? Could the newcomers help? How did the Big Eight Conference look?

Middleton’s veteran girls basketball coach pondered all scenarios.

As Kind mowed his lawn on Monday afternoon, though, basketball never crossed his mind.

That’s because earlier that day, the 68-year-old Kind submitted his resignation.

After 44 years of coaching, including the last 30 at Middleton, Kind decided it was the right time to step away.

Kind, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018, exits with a remarkable 578-256 career record. Kind also leaves as the sixth-winningest girls coach in state history.

What others said about MHS' Jeff Kind

Jeff Kind, Middleton’s girls basketball coach from 1993-2022, resigned Monday.

Kind, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2018, also coached the varsity girls basketball teams at Kohler and Cuba City for five years each. Kind finished his brilliant career with a 634-291 record and as the fifth-winningest girls coach in state history.

Kind led the Cardinals to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament 12 times and guided Middleton to 11 Big Eight Conference championships.

Here’s a sampling of what several former players and coaches said about Kind.

Not Too Late to Acquire ID for Primary Election

Wisconsin’s Fall Primary election is Tuesday (August 9, 2022) and voters who don’t already have a Wisconsin driver license, ID or other form of identification needed to vote may still get a Wisconsin ID from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The Wisconsin Elections Commission website explains the options for IDs to show at the polls. There is no separate “voter ID” and a federally compliant REAL ID card is not required for voting purposes.

Middleton's girls golfers thinking big again

The 2022 golf season marks the 10th year Becky Halverson has led Middleton’s girls program.

And what a decade it’s been.

In Halverson’s first nine seasons, Middleton has reached the WIAA Division 1 state tournament every year.

In that time, Halverson’s Cardinals have won three Division 1 state tournaments, matching Hartland Arrowhead for the most in the state. Middleton also has two second place finishes and three thirds — making it the state’s most successful program since 2013.

Look for Halverson’s 10th season to be every bit as enjoyable as her first nine.

Middleton returns three golfers from last year’s team that finished third at state and has a handful of other players ready to make their mark. And when the Cardinals begin their season at the Washington County Invite Thursday, expectations will once again be sky high for White’s sensational program.

Plan Commission Defers Rezoning on Proposed 376 Unit Apartment in Greenway Center

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission held a public hearing and voted on a rezoning request to construct three, eight story buildings with 376 multifamily units at 1551 Pleasant View Rd. Planning staff and plan commission members expressed support for the proposal but deferred the rezoning until various issues identified are resolved.

The proposal from LZ Ventures of Madison calls for three, eight story buildings, each containing 119 to 124 units and two levels of underground parking. The site is 5.32 acres and has been part of the Greenway Center Planned Development District (PDD) but has never been developed. The rezoning would create a new PDD. A PDD allows the city to create a zoning district tailored to a specific project which can be more or less stringent than typical zoning code.

Town Tries to Stay on Top of Brush Pile Burden

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–Roadside brush chipping, a popular service offered by the Town of Middleton has again grown to where it needs to be trimmed back, town staff requested Monday.

“It’s an ongoing battle. It was getting better...but we’re asking for a new policy,” Scott Ballweg, crew leader told the town board.

The town’s chipping service is not geared for residents who want their land cleared or entire trees removed. Instead, it’s aimed at brush piles that can be chipped in 15 minutes.

Ballweg sees the burden growing as the town grows, however, the town’s crew remains at four full-time and two part-time employees.

“A lot of people are getting mad,” he said. “There’s confusion about what they can bring out (to the road) and what they can’t. Some people insist that since they have more acres, they should be able to pile up more stuff,” Ballweg said.
