Electors in the Town of Middleton Meet

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–A review of an audit of the town’s 2021 financial statements, last year’s important events and swearing in a new board supervisor highlighted this year’s Town Electors’ meeting.

By state statute, towns must hold an annual meeting for electors, residents who are eligible voters, where they can decide to buy or sell property and other powers not delegated to the town board.

Electors also approve the annual tax levy which is usually presented in November.

The annual meeting has been held in April and are well attended when there’s a hot issue in play. In pre-pandemic years, electors crowded into town hall to defeat opting out of county zoning and selling 10 acres of parkland for development.

Meeting for the third consecutive year by Zoom, the April 19 virtual meeting attracted approximately 20 individuals.

Baseball Cardinals keep on rolling

Survival of the fittest.

That’s what many spring sports might turn into over the next few weeks.

After rain, wind, sleet and snow have caused postponements of games for more than a month now, teams everywhere have been forced to jam additional games into a tiny window.

Right now, though, Middleton’s baseball team is doing a tremendous job of handling the additional workload. The Cardinals played games on five straight days last week and went an impressive 4-1.

“It was a long week of baseball, but our guys did a great job of staying focused in the moment of each game,” Middleton manager Brent Jorgensen said. “We also had a few moments that really tested us as a team.”

Middleton defeated Milton, 5-0, on April 25 and fell to Verona, 13-8, on April 26. The Cardinals rolled past Beloit Memorial, 11-0 on April 27 and turned the tables on Verona with a 5-0 win on April 28.

Golfers hitting their stride

Tom Cabalka knows all of the parts are there.

Getting them to fit together — and having them all perform at the same time — has been a little trickier.

Cabalka, Middleton’s boys golf coach, has one of the more gifted groups in the state. But getting the Cardinals to shine at the same time has been a hit-and-miss deal.

Last week was the perfect example.

Middleton played sensational golf and won the 21-team Madison Edgewood Invite held at Blackhawk Country Club on April 25. The Cardinals had a solid day and were fourth at the Onalaska Invite on April 29.

Middleton then struggled through some brutal conditions and finished in 12th place at the MACC Fund Invitational last Saturday at Erin Hills Golf Course.

“Inconsistency by all of our players has been the biggest issue,” Cabalka said. “It's been like riding big waves on an ocean, some very good highs and some pretty big lows.

Patenaude leads boys track team

SUN PRAIRIE – Finn Patenaude isn’t afraid of a challenge.

That is why the Middleton junior plays varsity soccer in the fall and competes for Middleton’s club ski team in the winter, when he plays indoor soccer, as well. He also competes for a Madison-based Cyclocross team.

So when he opted to give track and field a try in middle school, Patenaude naturally gravitated toward the hurdles.

Good choice.

Patenaude recorded a pair of top-five finishes in the hurdles events at the 19-team Paul Frank Invitational hosted by Sun Prairie High School last Friday.

“I’ve played soccer my whole life. As a striker, an attacker, I love obstacles,” Patenaude said. “So when I went to my first track practice it was, ‘oh, I’ve got to try those’. That seemed easy for me.”

Girls track team battles at Sun Prairie Invitational

SUN PRAIRIE – Madilyn Vander Sanden welcomed the new track and field season, weather permitting, with new goals, new expectations and a different role on the Middleton girls track and field team.

Vander Sanden is off to a great start, surpassing her personal record in the shot put already this spring with a mark of 36 feet, 9 ¼ inches.

She didn’t set a new personal record last Friday when she competed at the 19-team Paul Frank Invitational at Sun Prairie High School. But Vander Sanden uncorked a toss of 34-8 on her second throw in the finals to finish in fourth place for the Cardinals.

Mosinee’s Brooke Baumann won the event with a throw of 36-0.

Softball Cardinals win three of four

Middleton’s girls softball team continues to take care of business against the bottom half of the Big Eight Conference.

Now, the Cardinals have to solve the top half of the league.

Middleton won three of four games last week, starting with a 6-2 win over Madison East on April 26. Madison Memorial toppled the Cardinals, 5-1, on April 27, but Middleton responded by sweeping a doubleheader against Madison La Follette — 17-0 and 17-1 — last Friday.

“Thankfully, this team is resilient,” Middleton coach Brittany Carl said. “We accepted the loss, learned from it, and then we moved on.”

The Cardinals are now 8-4 overall and sit alone in second place in the Big Eight at 7-2.

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ week:

• Middleton 6, Madison East 2 — Bailey Flock threw a complete-game four hitter to power the Cardinals past the Purgolders.

Flock gave up just one earned run, struck out two and walked two.
