A Time Before Roe v. Wade

My mother was 15 when she got pregnant with me in 1966.

Abortion was illegal.

As you might imagine, it was not cool to get pregnant at 15 in 1966 (it still isn’t), but that was the reality around my birth.

My aunts–my mom’s sisters–have filled in some of the detail of what was going on in my grandparent’s house at the time of this revelation. It wasn’t pretty by any account.

In spite of it being illegal, abortion was one of the options on the table and as my mom later explained, you could go to Indiana and get one (we were from Michigan) for a price.

Instead, my family decided that the best thing to do was adopt me out. My mother would go to a home for unwed mothers in Jackson, MI called the Florence Crittenden Home. My mother was there while she was pregnant and was to hand me over to the adoption agency at the hospital without even meeting me.

Free School Meals to End

MIDDLETON–Two years of free meals for all students will be coming to an end next month and the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District is preparing to begin charging again.

Normally, schools could only serve free or reduced-cost meals to income-eligible students. However, in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the US Department of Agriculture waived income guidelines and allowed all students to eat for free.

That waiver expires June 30 and unless it’s extended for a third year, income guidelines will be reinstated, Erin Wheeler, director of Business Services, told the school board Monday night.

The district’s costs to fed students for free was reimbursed by the state of Wisconsin.

The district has not raised meal prices since 2014-15 and has built a budget surplus since that time while also adding staff, a second kitchen and café at the high school.

The Task of Preserving Dane County’s Farmland

DANE COUNTY–One of the most popular bumper stickers in Dane County, which may or may not come standard on any new Prius or Subaru, states a simple slogan: “No Farms, No Food.” But with rapid development in Dane County, local fields are being usurped by subdivisions and parking lots, and families who spent generations tilling the soil say goodbye to a way of life forever.

City Council Reviews Housing Strategy and Vehicle Replacement Plans

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Common Council reviewed some of the latest data related to affordable housing in the county and recommendations to expand and preserve affordable housing. The council also reviewed the revised five-year vehicle replacement plan which will move aggressively to adopt an all electric fleet. The plan also will preserve internal combustion vehicles longer to save money and hold out until more electric vehicle options are available.

Dane County Senior Planner Oliva Parry presented the Dane County Regional Housing Strategy in Middleton to the council. The regional housing advisory committee will develop a study, inventory and assessment of programs, resources and tools currently used and develop a vision for housing and key priorities for Middleton’s plan, Parry said.

Parry described affordable housing as housing that costs no more than 30 percent of a person’s monthly income on rent.

Craig tops baseball Cards — twice

Middleton’s baseball team had a chance — make that two chances — to grab control of the Big Eight Conference race last week.

Instead, the Cardinals dropped a pair of heartbreaking, nailbiters to Janesville Craig.

The Cougars defeated the Cardinals, 4-2, in Middleton on May 4. One night later, Craig rallied for a 7-6 win in nine innings.

The Cougars now sit atop the conference with a 10-2 mark and are 11-3 overall. Middleton (9-3, 12-4) and Sun Prairie (8-2, 10-3) are tied for second in the league, both one game behind the Cougars.

Here’s a recap of Middleton’s games with Craig and its win over Beloit Memorial last Friday:

• Janesville Craig 4, Middleton 2 — Craig junior Aiden Schenk went the distance and earned the win as the Cougars prevailed in Middleton. Schenk allowed eight hits, but struck out eight and worked out of trouble throughout.

Baseball Cardinals top Spartans

On a beautiful, sun-splashed Saturday afternoon last weekend, the Middleton Cardinals took full advantage of the 60-degree temperatures to cap a tough week with a bounce-back victory.

Senior right-handers JT Hockers and Caden Gmur combined on a three-hitter, and senior center fielder Matthew Zimmerman powered the offense with three hits to lead Middleton to a 3-1 victory over Madison Memorial in a Big Eight prep baseball game.

“This was a perfect day for baseball,” Zimmerman said with a smile. “When it’s 11 a.m. and 60 degrees, sunny, you can’t ask for much more than that. You really can’t.”

The victory completed a season-sweep for Middleton (12-4 overall, 9-3 Big Eight) over Memorial (9-5, 7-5). Middleton earned a 14-7 road victory over the Spartans on April 29.
