Middleton golfers poised for memorable year

Tom Cabalka knows the ranking means nothing.

His golfers understand, as well.

Middleton’s boys golfers were ranked No. 1 in the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin preseason poll. While that kind of news might send a buzz through many programs, the Cardinals took notice, smiled for a second, then kept grinding.

“By having a high ranking, I hope this means that our boys realize that they need to work and practice with a meaning and play intelligently if they want to live up to the hype,” said Cabalka, Middleton’s veteran coach. “I have not heard any talk about the ranking because they know I don't take much stock in the early season. It matters in June. I think they realize that as well.”

Boys track team looks strong again

It’s been three years since the Big Eight has held a conference meet.

The 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19. And while there was a season in 2021, there wasn’t a conference meet.

That might have a break for everyone in the league not named Middleton.

The Cardinals won seven straight conference titles from 2012-19. And now after a two-year hiatus, Middleton is excited to prove its dominance inside the league once again.

“We have some really good programs in the Big Eight,” said Middleton first-year coach Chad Kliefoth, whose team began its season at Janesville Craig Tuesday. “Sun Prairie and (Madison) Memorial tend to be our rivals with Verona always showing up strong.

“Middleton has done well over the last few seasons and we have high expectations coming into this season to finish at the top. These kids work hard day-in and day-out and I would expect nothing less from this group.”

Middleton's Button strikes out 19

Megan Button has been a part of Middleton’s girls softball team for just a few short games.

And she’s already made history.

Button, a freshman pitcher for the Cardinals, set a school record by striking out 19 batters in an 8-1 win over Madison West on April 6. Middleton improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Eight Conference.

“Megan Button has been a phenomenal addition to our pitching rotation this year,” Middleton coach Brittany Carl said. “She's calm, cool, and collected, and always one step ahead. She's an incredibly cerebral player. She picks up on the little things hitters do and uses that to her advantage.”

Button allowed just two hits and West’s lone run was unearned. Button faced 23 batters — two over the minimum — and threw strikes on 76 of 111 pitches (68.5%).

Baseball Cards enjoy big week

Middleton’s baseball team enjoyed a terrific week, winning all three of its games.

The Cardinals defeated visiting Waunakee, 3-2, on April 6. The Cardinals also swept a doubleheader from Madison East — 12-0 and 16-0 — on April 5.

Middleton is now 4-1 on the young season and 2-0 in the Big Eight Conference.

• Middleton 3, Waunakee 2 — The Cardinals scored three runs in the final two innings — including two in the seventh — to rally past the Warriors on April 7.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jackson Rademacher singled with one out and went to second on a passed ball, then moved to third on an error. Steven Paulsen then reached on a fielder’s choice bunt that scored Rademacher and tied the game, 2-2.

After a fly ball out, Paulsen stole second and moved to third on an error by the Waunakee second baseman. Paulsen then scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Soccer Cards start strong

Hopes are high.

Expectations are great.

And Middleton’s girls soccer team showed why last weekend.

The Cardinals and Hudson played to a scoreless draw last Friday. Middleton then rolled past Oshkosh West, 3-0, last Saturday.

“It was a nice weekend of games displaying the variety of Wisconsin weather that we need to deal with,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “Friday we played under a majestic snowfall, cold and brisk, and the next morning a beautiful sunny Saturday, warming our smiley faces.”

In Middleton’s draw with Hudson, junior Naiya Rajpal was steady in goal in the first half, and freshman Lydia Paulsen was terrific in the second half.

“Rajpal was solid in goal, directing traffic and cleaning up any through balls,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “Paulsen took the second half in goal and came up with one point blank brilliant save to keep it at zeros.”

Hidden Oaks Subdivision Water Issue Drying Up

MIDDLETON–The once continuous whirl of sump pumps at some homes in the Hidden Oaks subdivision has been largely silenced credited by drier weather and efforts by the city of Middleton.

Sump pumps ran continuously after the August 2018 flood in many damp basements in the 120 homes in this far west subdivision. Hidden Oaks residents could see Glacial Lake Middleton swell just to the south, as the flood knocked out the pump that once lifted water over a berm before it flowed into a culvert under USH 14.

That prompted Ald. Luke Fuszard, a Hidden Oaks resident, to petition in 2019 to reactivate the long dormant Drainage District 19, formed 100-plus years prior, to improve agriculture production in lands bordering Black Earth Creek.

Hidden Oaks homeowners hoped the district would lower the level of Glacial Lake Middleton and reduce the time their sump pumps operated.

City Announces Assessments of All Properties

MIDDLETON–Property owners in the City of Middleton will soon receive letters from the City Assessor concerning the citywide revaluation process for 2022. All properties will be assessed.

The letters will include a survey of rental income and expenses for leased commercial property. The income and expense information will be kept confidential and be used solely by the assessor for establishing property values using the income approach. Residential properties are generally assessed using a comparable sales approach.

“All property owners will be receiving notices of changes in assessment this year. As a whole, the city’s assessments were at about 85 percent of market in 2021. The goal for the revaluation is to bring the average assessment level to 100 percent of market,” said city finance director Bill Burns.

The last property revaluation was for the 2018 assessment and tax year.

Yoga classes and other lessons could begin as early as 5:30 a.m. and parties may continue to bar time, according to information supplied to the Cross Plains Plan Commission, which recommended rezoning the property Monday night.

A two-bedroom apartment is planned for the top floor and would be the village’s first short-term rental living unit.

Janairo Beats West, School Board Incumbents Retain Seats

DANE COUNTY–Voters in the Spring Election offered up little surprise Tuesday when they went to the polls.

An upset came in Middleton when longtime city councilwoman Susan West was beat out by newcomer Lisa Janairo in the District 6 race. Janairo brought in 65.1 percent of the vote, with West taking 34.6 percent.

In a statement, Janairo said, “It’s an incredible honor to have the voters of District 6 select me to be their new representative on Middleton’s Common Council. I owe my election to a number of highly engaged volunteers and supporters who believed in me and who agreed that it was time for a change. I commend Alder Susan West for running a competitive race. She deserves our appreciation for devoting so many years to public service for the benefit of our city.
