Plan Commission Approves Rezoning for Proposed Four-story Apartment on Century Avenue

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved a rezoning request to build a 50-unit apartment building at 6904-6908 Century Ave. next to the Pick ‘n Save grocery store. The general building plan was approved with the rezoning but planning staff advised the commission to hold off approval of the specific building plan until issues are resolved relating to a traffic impact analysis and stormwater management plan.

The rezoning request from Madison Development Corporation would rezone two R-1 parcels containing two single-family residences to a planned development district (PDD). Lorrie Heinemann, Madison Development Corporation President & CEO, reviewed the project and changes to the plan since it was last before the plan commission.

Henige Sentenced in Sexual Assault Case

MADISON–A former Middleton and Mount Horeb man was sentenced on April 13 to five years in prison for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl when he was her neighbor in Middleton.

Brian R. Henige, 54, had been a neighbor of the girl’s family for 24 years and had worked with the girl’s father. The two families were so close that they had keys to each other’s house, the girl’s father was a groomsman at Henige’s wedding and the girl was a godparent to Henige’s youngest child.

Through his close association with the family, Henige learned of the girl’s self-esteem issues, which he exploited to groom her for a sexual relationship, said Circuit Judge Ellen Berz.

MHS Administrators Change Policies After Teacher’s Fine Arts Week Drag Performance

MIDDLETON–Following a drag performance put on by French teacher Matthew Kashdan during Fine Arts Week (FAW), Middleton High School (MHS) administrative staff have decided to use a vetting process for future staff acts at the Staff Variety Show.

FAW is an annual event at MHS where staff and students are given the opportunity to perform in front of their peers. The week of performances ends with the Staff Variety Show. In the past, staff acts have not been reviewed before the show, with Principal Peg Shoemaker saying that she was “surprised” by Kashdan’s performance.

In the future, staff acts will undergo a vetting process to “mitigate [conflicts] in advance,” Shoemaker said. “I want to make sure that staff… are not put in situations that cause harm to them.”

Softball Cards hold off Verona

Big-time players make big-time plays in big games.

Middleton senior third baseman Bailey Flock brought that adage to life in leading the Cardinals to a key early-season prep softball victory over perennial Big Eight Conference power Verona on April 12 at Orchid Heights Park.

With a runner at third and two outs in the top of the seventh inning, and the host Cardinals clinging to a two-run lead, Flock made the defensive play of the game.

Flock made a diving stop to her right and gunned a throw from her knees to first base to retire clean-up hitter Ellie Osting for the final out and preserve a 5-3 victory over Verona.

Middleton improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the Big Eight Conference, while the Wildcats fell to 1-1, 0-1.

“You’ve got some of these kids on defense who are just gritty,” Middleton head coach Brittany Carl said. “They will do what it takes to support (freshman pitcher) Megan (Button).

Girls soccer team puts scare into DSHA

They faced the best.

And Middleton’s girls soccer team left understanding that they can certainly play with the best.

The Cardinals traveled to DSHA — the defending WIAA Division 1 state champs — on April 12. And while the Dashers prevailed, 2-1, Middleton discovered that it can play with anyone in the state.

“The coaching staff and I are so proud of the team for the fighting spirit they have and the way they battled,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said.

The game was played in heavy winds and the Dashers had the wind at their back in the first half. DSHA took full advantage, scoring goals in the 25th and 35th minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

When the teams switched sides at halftime, though, Middleton looked like a different team in the next 40 minutes.

“With a switch at half came a switch in the wind, a switch in our play and a switch in our mentality,” Duffy said. “We came out with renewed vigor and tenacity.”
