County Supervisors Introduce Broadband Resolution to Expand Grants

DANE COUNTY–County supervisors Michele Doolan (District 28), Pat Downing (District 30) and Dave Ripp (District 29) last week introduced a resolution to commit matching funds for a Public Service Commission (PSC) Broadband Expansion grant application for approximately 1,000 locations in the Southwest and Western areas of Dane County.

“Basically, we’re partnering with the state to expand the affordability piece of [broadband access],” said Doolan.

If the resolution is ultimately approved, Dane County would be committing $1 million of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds towards the project (if the grant application is successful), estimated to cost approximately $10.3 million.  Charter Communications will be applying for the funds and would provide at least $3.5 million for the project. The application is requesting a match from the State of Wisconsin for the remaining amount.

Cowboy

One day, someone dumped a puppy at the gate of a ranch in Oklahoma. The dirt leading to it was hard umber, snaked with tire tracks. On the fence to the right hung a large, orange “NO TRESPASSING” sign. Far in the distance, low white buildings housed people and animals. Chestnut horses grazed on tawny grass inside the fence.

Black History Month

I am a firm believer that Black history is everyone’s history and should be taught year-round as part of regular school curriculum. But because of the racism and oppression of Black people that has been persistent and prevalent in our country since its founding, that has not happened. Instead, we take the month of February to highlight Black leaders and achievements. I hope someday this will change, but at this time we are celebrating Black History Month.

I have compiled a list of some of the Black historical figures in the US, trying to feature those that are lesser known than the few we have learned about in school. I encourage you to research these innovators, leaders and inventors as well as others Black Americans who have greatly contributed to our society.

Bessie Coleman: Aviation pioneer

Phillis Wheatly: Poet

Althea Gibson: Tennis star

Madam CJ Walker: First Black millionaire, inventor of beauty products

Town Approves ATC Road Use, Stonebrook Estates Land Purchase

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–The Middleton Town Board Monday authorized American Transmission Co. (ATC) to use its roads to build a power line from north of Dubuque to a substation in the town.

ATC would use Timber Lane plus Airport, Old Sauk, Twin Valley and Rocky Dell Roads largely as return routes for semi-trucks hauling in construction material to be stockpiled on leased land in the Town of Cross Plains.

The Road Repair Reimbursement Agreement is similar to one the board rejected two weeks ago as it didn’t mention reimbursement for damage to guardrails on what Town Chair Cynthia Richson called “narrow, windy Rocky Dell Road.”

Jon Callaway, of ATC, said hauling would occur during a two-week period this spring after load limits are lifted from roads, as well as a 45-day period near the end of the year.

Sheriff, DA Rally for New Jail–Supervisors Delay Vote

MADISON–Everyone agrees, something must be done to improve the conditions at the Dane County Jail, and after years of discussions and planning, those improvements are still up in the air.

At a press conference on Valentine’s Day, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett and Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne were joined by Dr. Bill Greer, who worked at the jail facility, Allison Owens, a formerly justice involved community member and members of the Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies Union to support the original plan for a 922 bed jail with mental and medical care services on site.

The conference came on the heels of RES-320, which would add an addition $24 million to the $200 million project, citing increased costs and the project stalling out for the past two years due to COVID-19.

MHS swimmers shine at state

WAUKESHA — As they exited Waukesha South High School last Saturday, Middleton’s boys swimming team basked in the glory of a terrific afternoon.

The Cardinals notched first place finishes in two relays, had several outstanding performances in individual events and finished fourth at the WIAA Division 1 state meet. Brookfield Central/East won the team championship with 208 points, while Arrowhead (188), Madison West (182), Middleton (175) and Sun Prairie (173) rounded out the top five.

The Cardinals then paused for a second and realized next year could be even better. With the majority of their point scorers expected back and a gifted freshman class on the way, things could be even better for Middleton in 2023.

“We won the state championship my freshman year and I'd love to see us win it again my senior year,” Middleton junior standout Nick Chirafisi said. “It can happen. Plan on us bringing the heat.”

Middleton earns No. 5 seed

There was excitement, enthusiasm — and a little bit of trepidation.

Middleton’s boys basketball team learned Sunday afternoon that it received the No. 5 seed in its WIAA Division 1 sectional.

The Cardinals were excited to have such a solid seed in their 18-team sectional. But Middleton’s postseason path could be a beast.

Middleton (15-8) hosts 12th-seeded Wauwatosa East (9-11) in a regional semifinal on March 4 at 7 p.m. The Red Raiders are the defending Division 1 state champions and are led by University of Virginia recruit Leon Bond.

If the Cardinals win there, they’ll either travel to fourth-seeded Arrowhead (16-6) or host 13th-seeded Verona (11-11) in a regional final on March 5.

If the seeds hold, Middleton would face top-seeded Brookfield Central (18-5) in a sectional semifinal on March 10. And the sectional final on March 12 would be against second-seeded Madison La Follette (15-4).
