Hockey Cards split a pair

Middleton’s hockey team has faced a brutal schedule to start the year.

But after a week where the Cardinals earned an impressive split, they were feeling OK about the direction they’re headed.

Middleton defeated Sun Prairie, 5-3, on Dec. 7, then fell to state power Verona, 6-3, two nights later.

Middleton is now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big Eight Conference.

“Overall, it was a good week for our guys,” Cardinals head coach Dan Truehl said. “We played well in both games and proved to ourselves that we can play with the best in the area and state.

“We still need to learn how to win close games. With younger teams this isn’t uncommon, but being on the right side of a hard fought, close game would go a long way.”

Middleton earned an impressive win over Sun Prairie, as Vince Kalscheur notched three goals in a 20-minute window to lift his team to victory.

MHS swimmers put on a show

Middleton’s boys swimming team won the prestigious Barracuda Invite held at Brookfield Central High School last Saturday.

The Cardinals finished with 642.5 points to edge Madison Memorial (637.50) at the seven-team invite. The Brookfield Barracudas were a distant third at 480.

“The boys were definitely better than last week, and swam more consistently in their events, even after a very tough week of practice,” Middleton coach R.J. Leiferman said.

Middleton’s quartet of Jack Madoch, Blaise Lin, Jack Madigan and Nick Chirafisi won the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Cardinals’ foursome of Theo Wolf, Cowan Vitense, Chirafisi and Madoch won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

And Middleton’s 200-yard medley relay team of Wolf, Noah Dorn, Vitense and Blaise Lin was third.

“Both our 200 relays in the meet vs. Memorial pulled out very close comeback wins which was very exciting to watch,” Leiferman said.

Middleton Grad's Podcast Finalist in iHeartRadio Competition

RICHMOND, VA–Middleton High School graduate Derek Hoot (’13) began his wheelchair career in Wisconsin, and now plays Men’s Division II basketball for SportAble in Richmond, VA.

Hoot’s latest endeavor is a podcast called “PUSH: Wheelchair Basketball,” which has quickly grown in popularity.

“I wanted to provide a platform for wheelchair basketball players and coaches to share their accomplishments and stories. During my time playing at the University of Illinois, as well as Jordan and Germany, I met so many talented athletes with stories of overcoming adversity and thought, ‘why isn’t there any sports media dedicated exclusively to these kinds of stories?’ At that time, I had been listening to lots of NBA Podcasts like All the Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, or Pull Up Podcast with CJ McCollum, so I already had an intimate player-to-player interview format to model after,” he explained.

A Mangy Dog Story

Every year I try to write about a stray dog.

It was 20 years ago, in Alabama. We were staying with my girlfriend’s family for the holidays, and we saw the miserable creature trotting down the side of a lonely, gothic country road one morning, through a haze. She looked like an extra in “The Walking Dead.” Her coat was nearly gone, the skin gnarled and blotted by mange. Her xylophone ribs insisted on the edges of the body. She seemed, and I didn’t even know this was physically possible until then, to be limping on all four legs. I couldn’t tell if her coat had been brindle, or if it was simply striped by scars and dried mud.

Airport to Seek Federal Funds to Offset Cost of Unleaded Fuel Tank

MIDDLETON–The Airport Commission is looking to Congress for $300,000 to add a tank for unleaded aviation fuel and acquire the existing fuel facilities at the Middleton Municipal Airport Morey Field.

Last month, the commission recommended that the Middleton Common Council “hold tight” on going ahead with plans to offer unleaded fuel at the airport but instead they allocated $30,000 for engineering fees associated with the project.

Since then, the commission received a $16,070 proposal from a Milwaukee-area engineering firm for installation of a 12,000-gallon double-walled tank. At their Dec. 3 meeting the commission conditionally recommended that the common council approve it.

“Owning the fuel farm is required for the city to do modifications necessary to add unleaded aviation fuel,” Davis wrote last week.

The insurance cost that would accompany the city’s ownership of the fuel farm would be about $4,000 annually, Davis wrote.

Kristin Lynn “Kristie” Konsoer

MIDDLETON–Kristin Lynn “Kristie” Konsoer, age 51, peacefully returned home to God on Dec. 5, 2021, after living over nine years with breast cancer.

I was born on May 30, 1970, in Madison, the daughter of Donald and Carol (Christensen) Konsoer and grew up in Middleton. I loved Sunday visits with grandma on the farm outside of Wisconsin Dells. School was also one of my favorite places. I loved learning so much that I would often play school when I got home each day. I was a lifelong reader, writer, and learner.

Over the years, I was fortunate to have traveled widely throughout the US and visited 26 countries. Family vacations held many favorite memories for me. Disney World, national parks–Yellowstone in particular–and Fish Creek in Door County are forever in my heart.

Middleton KO's Madison Memorial

MADISON – It didn’t take long for Middleton to take control of its Big Eight Conference matchup with rival Madison Memorial last Saturday night.

Senior guard TJ Bauer drained an early three-pointer to stake Middleton to a lead it would never relinquish on the way to an impressive 68-50 victory over the host Spartans.

But it was the damage the visiting Cardinals unleashed on defense that proved to be the difference-maker.

“We just wanted to pressure the ball a lot. That was one of our main goals, make them turn it over,” said Middleton 6-foot-5 junior Gavyn Hurley, who led all scorers with 16 points and was credited with five steals. “We knew they couldn’t handle some pressure. That was the main goal, put some pressure on the ball.

“It was a great team win. We had balanced scoring, and everyone played hard on defense, too.”
