Newspaper Resumes School Supply Drive

MIDDLETON–In 2020, the Times-Tribune suspended its school supply drive, asking donors to make monetary contributions to MOM (Middleton Outreach Ministry) for the purchase of supplies. This year with loosened COVID-19 restrictions, school supplies will once again be collected for MOM’s Back to School program.

“We are very happy that we can begin collecting school supply donations for MOM once again. The Back to School program is important for providing supplies those who need help completing the required list,” said Times-Tribune editor, Michelle Phillips.

CP Water Rates Could Go Up 41%

CROSS PLAINS–Water rates would increase overall by 41 percent, or $12.44 a month, if the Public Service Commission (PSC) approves the rate request as submitted last week by the village of Cross Plains.

The village’s water utility needs additional revenue to fund a new $2.3 million well, the $1.2 million rehabilitation of an existing well and an upgrade of electronic controls, Kevin Krysinski, an auditor with Johnson Block, told the village board during last Thursday’s special meeting.

Village residents currently pay $30.35 monthly for 3,000 gallons of water, a 41 percent rate hike would increase that amount to $42.42 if the PSC determines that a 41 percent rate hike is needed for the utility’s long term financial viability.

Battle of the Badges Back in Full Swing

MIDDLETON–Battle of the Badges, an annual charity fundraiser to help a family battling childhood disease and hosted by the Middleton Police Department and Middleton Fire District, will return after a year hiatus due to COVID-19.

This year the organizations will honor Ella Wayman a five-year-old who in August of 2019 was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue; specifically skeletal muscle tissue or sometimes hollow organs such as the bladder or uterus.  RMS can occur at any age, but it most often affects children.

In September of the same year, Ella had a tumor removed from her abdomen and began 67 weeks of chemotherapy. Every week, the chemotherapy is different, sometimes the treatment occurs daily, with trips back and forth to the treatment facility, and other times it is in-patient.

Adler's heroics lift Ashton

ASHTON – The script was set for a storybook ending.

Shane Adler made sure it was a happy one for the Ashton As on Fan Appreciation Day.

Adler blasted a solo walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift host Ashton to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Black Earth in the final regular season game in Home Talent League Northern Section play last Sunday.

“It was a no-doubter, for sure,” said Black Earth center fielder Bryce Barsness, a former teammate of Adler’s at Madison College and UW-La Crosse. “When you hit a certain ball, you can hear it. There’s a big difference on whether you got it or you didn’t. He got it.”

The victory secured the No. 2 seed and home field advantage for the A’s through at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Ashton (9-2) will host Reedsburg (5-6) in a first-round Northern Section playoff game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
