Cross Plains Man Charged in Decades Old Child Sexual Assault Case

BARABOO–A Cross Plains man recently has been charged with three counts of First Degree Sexual Assault of a Child in a case that was reopened 27 years after the alleged offenses have been said to have occurred.

According to published accounts:

Michael J. Hill, 63, was a science teacher at River Valley High School and had adopted a girl from Columbia. The girl told Spring Green police in 1995 that Hill had allegedly made sexual contact with her. Hill reportedly told an investigator that he had sexual contact with the girl on one occasion. At the time, the investigation didn’t result in any prosecution against Hill.

The alleged assaults would have occurred in 1992 when the girl was 11 and Hill was 34, according to the Sauk County Department of Human Services records.

Runway Lengthening Gains Support

MIDDLETON–Lengthening the main runway received increased support last week at the final Airport Master Plan Advisory Committee meeting.

Prior polls showed scant interest in increasing the current 4,000-foot east-west runway, and on Thursday, a no-build option was still preferred by six members. However, five members, including all the representatives of the business community, preferred lengthening the runway by 200 or 400 feet.

Airport Manager and Morey Airplane Co. President Richard Morey initially saw no real benefit in lengthening the runway to the west but on Thursday said that it could be done “for very little additional money.”

Tennis Cards dialing up winners

They are undefeated.

They have climbed to No. 2 in the state.

And all of their goals certainly seem within reach.

Middleton’s boys tennis team went a perfect 4-0 at the star-studded Nicolet Invite last weekend. The Cardinals also rolled past Madison West, Waunakee and Verona last week, winning all seven of their matches in impressive fashion.

“The season has been pretty special to this point,” Middleton coach Tony Mirasola said. “The way we have played consistently from top to bottom has been really impressive.

“With the schedule being condensed we have only had a handful of practicing, but with all of the talented guys we have they have come together as a team quickly. Guys support one another and help each other push through those tough matches and have stepped up when others have been hurt.”

Here’s a recap of the Cardinals’ impressive week:

Baseball Cardinals are rolling

MADISON – A late afternoon shower threatened to put a damper on Middleton’s bid for payback at Warner Park last Friday.

But the show eventually went on, and the baseball Cardinals turned the ‘Duck Pond’ into their own private playground.

Senior left-hander Aidan Williams allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters over five innings, and the Cardinals took advantage of eight wild pitches from Madison La Follette pitchers to blank the host Lancers, 9-0, in a Big Eight Conference game.

Middleton (9-6 overall, 7-3 Big Eight) earned a split of the season series with La Follette (4-5, 4-5), which edged the Cardinals, 2-1, on May 14.

Golfers poised for postseason run

Amazingly, the second season is here.

And if Middleton’s boys golf team continues its upward ascent, the Cardinals could make it a memorable postseason.

The Cardinals finished the Big Eight Conference regular season with an 8-1 mark after winning a triangular on May 19 at Edelweiss. Middleton shot a 307 to edge Verona (311) and Madison West (372).

Middleton is also ranked No. 3 in the latest Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin poll. Only Kettle Moraine and Hartland Arrowhead are ranked ahead of the Cardinals.

Middleton senior Jacob Beckman — a University of Wisconsin recruit — led the Cardinals with a 69 at Edelweiss. After struggling with his putter in recent weeks, Beckman heated up and led Middleton to an important win.

“Jacob's 69 was great to see,” Middleton coach Tom Cabalka said. “He's been close, but the putts finally found the hole. He's had all kinds of good looking birdie putts in the last couple weeks, but not many have fallen.”

Soccer Cards unbeaten in Big 8

The road is about to get a lot tougher.

But Middleton’s girls soccer team has put itself in terrific position to chase a Big Eight Conference title this spring.

The Cardinals defeated Madison Memorial, 3-2, last Thursday and improved to 4-0 in the league. Middleton also dropped a 3-0 decision to Mukwonago last Saturday and is now 5-3-1 overall.

“So far with the Big Eight, we are doing well, but our tough matches have only started with Memorial,” Middleton coach Mary Duffy said. “This upcoming week we have West, Verona, and the next week Sun Prairie and (Janesville) Craig back to back.

“Amazingly enough, it seems like we have just started the season and yet, we have two more weeks of regular season games. We have had a handful of practices and lots of games. We are just starting to gel and figure out our strengths together as a team.”

Middleton’s win over Memorial was impressive.
