Pauls named MHS' boys soccer coach

Kevin Pauls isn’t ashamed to admit it.

He’s a little nervous. And it’s easy to see why.

Pauls was recently named the new boys soccer coach at Middleton High School. And Pauls understands that taking over a program as powerful as the Cardinals is an awfully tall task.

“While I'm super excited, I'm also very honored and even a bit nervous,” Pauls said. “Within a couple hours … I heard from friends, family, current and past players, parents, and colleagues, literally around the world congratulating me, which made me feel great, but also shows the amount of pressure that comes with this program. This program has been at the top for a long time.”

But Pauls certainly seems ready to take the reins.

Pauls is a lifelong soccer player who attended McFarland High School and began coaching with the Spartans in 1998. At McFarland, Pauls coached at all levels and was also a varsity assistant.

Vogel takes over girls volleyball program

Maddie Vogel grew up trying to beat Middleton in volleyball.

Now, she’ll try helping the Cardinals’ program recapture their past glory.

Vogel was recently hired as Middleton’s girls volleyball coach. Vogel, who coached the Cardinals’ JV team last year, replaces Franco Marcos — who stepped down at the end of the 2019 season.

“I could not be more excited,” Vogel said. “As the JV coach last year I was able to get to know the team, and I feel so fortunate for the continued opportunity to work with them again. It’s a fantastic group of girls both on and off the court.”

Vogel played at Capital Volleyball Academy in both middle and high school. Vogel attended Verona High School, where she was a two-time all-Big Eight Conference performer and helped the Wildcats reach the WIAA Division 1 state tournament during her sophomore season in 2011.

On May 26, the board voted unanimously to authorize Chairman Yingling to make the determination on whether events currently scheduled at State Fair Park, including the 2020 Wisconsin State Fair, are to be canceled, after extensive input from each board member and Kathleen O’Leary, Executive Director/CEO. On May 28, Yingling announced that for the safety of fairgoers, staff, vendors, entertainers, exhibitors, sponsors, suppliers and the broader community, the 2020 Wisconsin State Fair has been canceled.

Weather

My dad recently stopped watching the weather. When a retired farmer and avid gardener decides he’s done with these daily prognostications, it’s noteworthy.

He didn’t do it for the reason I initially guessed (that they are almost always wrong). Instead, he did it because of their relentless negativity.

Anytime there will be any rain, they inject their “report” with a splash of mopey personal opinion: “It’s going to be another dreary day out there,” they warn.

My dad, who is not one to go around picking fights on social media, even went so far as to contact a Madison meteorologist and explain to him that for farmers, gardeners, and anyone who cares about plant and animal life, rain is a gift. Throughout nearly all of human history, rain is something people literally prayed for. Not that long ago, they sacrificed people and animals to the gods whose fickle moods might bring them life-giving water from above.

Council Discusses Phase I Reopening Plan, Pool to Open

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Aquatic Center will open!

The Middleton Common Council voted to open the facility at their May 19 meeting, following guidelines set forth by Public Health of Madison and Dane County (PHMDC).

Before the vote council members asked questions of Rebecca Price, assistant director of recreation, including those about capacity, sanitation and social distancing. Price told them that in Phase I the pool can open at 25 percent capacity, but she sees the pool reaching that number gradually. All furniture will be removed, and cleaning procedures will be ramped up to ensure public safety. In addition, she said it would be unlikely that the pool could accommodate the Middleton Gators swim team with the restrictions, and reminded the council that swim meets are currently not being held.

At the beginning of the meeting Gators coach Matt Flannagan made a plea to open the pool.

Cross Plains to Allow ATVs on Village Streets

CROSS PLAINS–By a 4-3 vote at their May 26 meeting, the Cross Plains Village Board opened streets to all-terrain vehicles and closed off a chance for a referendum on the long-contentious topic.

The narrow votes with Board Members Sarah Francois, Bill Brosius and Kevin Thusius, voting against an ordinance permitting ATVs and UTVs; and for an advisory referendum, shows how divided the village has become.

Discussion on social media turned to “bullying,” said Amalia Hicks, an ATV opponent, and even a board member was accused of intimidating speech during a previous board meeting. However, the accuser declined to pursue the matter.
