Firefighters Receive CAPS Training

MIDDLETON–Nearly 40 Middleton firefighters learned Monday how to respond to an emergency involving an airplane equipped with a rocket-powered parachute.

Cirrus Aircraft builds all its planes around its Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) which the pilot can deploy in the event of engine failure to prevent a crash.

CAPS uses a small solid fuel rocket to pull a large parachute from the rear of the plane which allows it to float to the ground, landing with the impact of a 13-foot fall, said Matt Hofeldt, Capital Flight co-owner, which hosted the training session.

While there are at least two Cirrus airplanes based at Middleton Municipal Airport-Morey Field, many more are in the sky as Duluth, Minnesota-based Cirrus has sold more than 7,000 of its SR series single-engine aircraft. Also, CAPS can be retrofitted to planes made by other companies.

Downtown Plaza Moves Forward, Named Stone Horse Green

MIDDLETON–The downtown plaza, located next to Village Green, officially has a name, Stone Horse Green. The moniker reflects the stone horse sculptures, called “Herd of Boulders,” that will be installed at the park. In addition, plans are moving forward to start work on the green space in spring of 2020.

Abby Attoun Middleton Director of Planning & Community Development said the city has contributed $500,000 and still needs to raise $1 million to cover the costs for the new park.

She said the concept for the green space was presented to the Plan Commission in 2015 and the city purchased properties in January 2018. The city then asked residents their vision for the space.

“We started with a sign on the property saying, ‘What do you want to see here?’ We held widely attended public input sessions and that helped us to hone in on five design principles for the space,” Attoun explained.

Those principles are as follows:

Girls basketball team has unfinished business

Josie Lemirande put an app on her phone last summer counting down the days until the girls’ basketball season began.

“I can’t wait,” Lemirande said.

Sitori Tanin has been crossing off the days since the painful ending last March.

“It was throughout the whole team,” Tanin said. “Since the first week of practice we could all feel it. We have so many returners and we all have so much drive and excitement.”

Excitement.  Anticipation. Eagerness.

Middleton’s girls basketball team — which hosts Waunakee in its season-opener Thursday at 7:15 p.m. — has been looking forward to this season for nearly eight months now.

Five MHS golfers named all-state

Middleton’s girls golf team had an unforgettable season on the links, winning the WIAA Division 1 state tournament last month.

The Cardinals also had a historic year when it came to postseason honors.

Middleton’s top five golfers all earned some form of all-state honors, as well as all-Big Eight Conference recognition. It marked just the second time in school history that all five Cardinal golfers were named all-state in the same season.

Middleton senior Kate Meier was named first-team all-state and first-team all-Big Eight. Meier was also the conference’s Player of the Year.

Junior Glenna Sanderson was named honorable mention all-Big Eight and second-team all-state, while sophomore Ellie Frisch was named first-team all-Big Eight and third-team all-state. Sophomore Milanne Dahmen was named first-team all-conference and honorable-mention all-state, while senior Makenzie Hodson was named second-team all-conference and honorable-mention all-state.

Middleton swimmers set for state

The 2019 season has thrown virtually everything possible at Middleton’s girls swimming and diving team.

Illness. Injury. Defection.

The Cardinals have experienced it all.

But Middleton had a terrific day at the Beloit Memorial Sectional last Saturday and heads to the state meet anxious to make some noise once again.

Sun Prairie won the sectional with 377.5 points, while Middleton was second with 308.0. Madison Memorial (307), Madison West (300.5) and V-MH (256.5) rounded out the top five.

The Cardinals, who have won three straight WIAA Division 1 state championships, are not the favorites this year. But Middleton will be represented in 15 of 18 events when the state meet begins Saturday at 3 p.m. at the UW Natatorium and hopes to surprise.
