Thomas, MHS golfers win titles

As the ball hung in the air, Middleton girls golf coach Becky Halverson turned to standout junior Alexis Thomas.

Almost in prophetic fashion, White said, “That looks really good. Be good.”

It was.
Thomas holed a 52-degree wedge from 95 yards out for an eagle on the 11th hole at the Big Eight Conference tournament last Thursday. That shot helped Thomas capture medalist honors and sparked the Cardinals to a conference title in a meet held at Evansville Golf Course.

Thomas shot a 1-over-par 73 to win the individual title, while teammate Loren Skibba shot a 76 and finished second.

That dynamic duo helped Middleton post a 323-team score, 10 shots better than runner-up Verona (333).

The Wildcats won the conference tournament a year ago, so Middleton was thrilled to reclaim the crown.

Soccer Cards lead Big Eight

They’ve put themselves in a position they desired.

Now, Middleton’s boys soccer team will try finishing what it started.

The Cardinals lead the Big Eight Conference with a 3-0-1 league mark and are 7-2-1 overall. With the meat of the conference schedule ahead, Middleton will try capturing a Big Eight title.

“We have players contributing in unexpected ways and in unexpected roles and they are still thriving,” Middleton coach Ben Kollasch said. “This team, so far, has epitomized the theory that Middleton never rebuilds, just reloads.”

Middleton notched a 4-1 win over Madison La Follette last Tuesday and a 2-0 win over Eau Claire Memorial last Saturday. In between, the Cardinals completed a previously suspended game against Madison East and rallied for a 2-2 tie with the Purgolders.

Now comes the daunting part of Middleton’s schedule.

Swimmers rout Memorial

Middleton’s girls swimming and diving team lead the Big Eight Conference.

And the Cardinals are showing no signs of letting anyone into the race.

Middleton cruised past traditional power Madison Memorial, 120-50, last Friday. The Cardinals are now 6-0 in the league with only three conference meets remaining.

“This was another solid meet for the team,” Middleton coach Lauren Cabalka said. “Every week, we review what went well in the previous week and where we have room to improve and the girls were incredibly focused on continuing to perform at a high level.

“Practices are getting more intense and physical and mental exhaustion is certainly setting in, so it is getting more and more difficult to perform at a high level consistently. I have been very impressed with the girls’ ability to defy tired bodies and minds and show improvement every week.”

Middleton swept all three relay events.

MHS runners shine at Midwest Invite

Middleton’s girls cross country team finished third at the 30-team Midwest Invitational in Janesville last Saturday.

Hartland Arrowhead was first with 85 points, while Kimberly was second at 89. Middleton was third with 152 points, while Madison West (192) and Wisconsin Lutheran (214) rounded out the top five.

Sam Valentine was second individually, completing the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 35 seconds.

“Sam Valentine continues to burn the courses,” Middleton co-coach Cindy Bremser said. “She ran another personal best and closed a 20-second gap on the top runner.”

Charlotte Sue was 21st (20:01), Erika Rader was 27th (20:20), Autumn Grim was 49th (20:57) and Iris Ohlrogge was 53rd (21:05).

“Going under 20 (minutes) is a big goal for Charlotte and it will happen soon,” Bremser said. “Erika Rader continues to improve and gain confidence and is a strong No. 3 runner on the team.

Girls spikers 5th at Oshkosh tourney

Middleton’s girls volleyball team tied for fifth at the 16-team UW-Oshkosh tournament last Saturday.

Meghan Bayer had a terrific performance and was named to the all-tournament team.

Pewaukee then edged Middleton, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12.

Boys spikers hammer West

It’s not always sexy.

But more often than not, it’s extremely successful.

Defense, defense and more defense is what Middleton boys volleyball coach Ben White stresses. And it’s usually key for the Cardinals.

That was certainly the case last Thursday, when Middleton rolled past Madison West, 25-9, 25-19, 25-12.

“Easily our best defensive match of the season,” White said. “Madison West has a couple of outside (hitters) that can hit pretty hard and they swing for the fences every time. That leads to more blocks, more digs and more errors by your opponent.”

Senior outside hitter Kevin McMahon led the Cardinals with 18 kills and two aces, while senior middle blocker Blake Sprecher had seven kills. Senior setter Matthew Caamal had 20 assists and sophomore setter Andrew Lepage had seven assists.

Madison Memorial stuns Middleton

One by one, they trudged off Memorial Field with the same look on their faces.

Shock. Anger. Disbelief. Frustration.

Middleton’s football team seemed well on its way to keeping its unbeaten season alive Friday night. But visiting Madison Memorial scored the final 17 points and rallied for a stunning 31-28 win.

The Spartans prevailed when junior kicker Karl Hummel drilled a 20-yard field goal with 3 seconds left.

Middleton dropped to 5-1 overall and in the Big Eight Conference and is now tied for first place in the league with Madison La Follette. Madison Memorial won its fourth straight game and improved to 4-2.

“I don’t know what happened. I’m just shocked,” said Cardinals senior running back Cam Maly. “We do expect to win. We work hard every day and we get better every day. We don’t expect to just fall apart.”

Fire Leaves Residents With Nowhere To Go

Karina De Lira awoke with a cough and smelled  smoke.  In the pre-dawn gloom, she saw her young daughter standing in the doorway of their second floor apartment on Allen Boulevard.

“She was scared,” said De Lira, using her sister-in-law, Evelyn Cerez, as an interpreter.

“There were people screaming and yelling for help,” she added.

De Lira, who had arrived home from work shortly after 1 a.m. and gone to sleep, grabbed her three children and headed for the door.

“When [I] opened the door, the smoke came, the fire came right at [me],” she recalled.

They slammed the door and headed to the balcony. Faced with a crushing decision, De Lira picked up one of her sons and readied to drop him from the second-story to the relative safety of the ground below. It was, she thought, the only way to escape.

De Lira said her son, in the fog of sleep, begged her not to.

Girls golfers win Big 8

This was simply the first major success in their two-month journey.

There are several more challenges to come.

But Middleton’s girls golfers will happily tell you this was an extremely enjoyable achievement.

The Cardinals captured the Big Eight Conference regular season title last Wednesday. Middleton shot a 323 at Pleasant View Golf Course and toppled Verona by 11 strokes. Madison Memorial didn’t field a full team and finished third.

The Cardinals finished 9-0 in Big Eight dual meets, while Verona ended the year 8-1.

“I’m really proud of the girls,” Middleton coach Becky Halverson said. “This was just one step in our road to our main goal. We have several more steps to go in the coming weeks, but I know they can do it if they keep focused and relaxed.”

A year ago, Middleton and Verona tied for the conference regular season crown. This time through, the Cardinals were in no mood to share.
