Lt. Governor Visits West Middleton Students

During a visit to West Middleton Elementary School last week, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch encouraged schools across Wisconsin to sign up for the STEP program and help ensure their students are prepared to respond to various emergencies and disasters, from tornadoes to floods to blizzards.

STEP (Student Tools for Emergency Planning) is a turn-key classroom curriculum for teachers to prepare 5th graders for various emergencies and disasters.

The program also shows students how to put together an emergency kit and develop an emergency plan with their families.

“When disaster strikes, it’s important that Wisconsin communities know how to respond and act quickly,” Kleefisch said. “The STEP program not only teaches students how to prepare for emergencies, but it also encourages them to share that information with their families. I encourage interested schools throughout the state to sign up for this program and help prepare their students for emergencies.”

Beware the Panhandling Menace?

“Be careful everyone! The gypsies might throw their babies at you.”

We stood in a swarming French train station - surrounded by gothic clocks, smoke and a mist of people making throaty noises I had to assume were words.

I departed for France with the impression even babies there smoked cigarettes and drank wine. Colorfully dressed nomads hurling small children hadn’t been mentioned during pre-trip preparations.

Was it like the beach ball at baseball games? Or perhaps the dropped babies were sent to a special school and groomed to someday become American politicians.

“It’s an old trick,” our tour guide continued. “A woman will throw her baby at you. When you grab it with both hands, someone else will pick your pocket. She’ll snatch her baby back and they’ll be gone before you know what happened.”

Gaming Café Goes Out of Business

Traveler’s Hearth Café and Games has closed its doors just a few months after opening for business.

Jim Mirkes and his son, Tim Mirkes, ran the gaming coffee house together at 2831 Parmenter Street. On Nov. 26, the management posted a message on the Traveler’s Hearth Facebook page confirming the closure.

“It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that [we] have permanently closed the doors of Traveler’s Hearth Café & Games,” the message stated. “We are working to keep our absence from being a permanent one, but for the time being, we cannot continue operation[s]. It is our dearest hope that we may be able to return to the Madison area in the future and continue to provide a venue for great coffee, great games, and great friends.”

The site was formerly the Blue Spoon.
