Doll Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

MIDDLETON–In December of 2019 the Middleton Police Department received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children related to a Middleton resident who was possibly in possession of child pornography. An investigation into the tip led to a search warrant that was served on Feb. 12.

Based on the investigation, Steven R. Doll, 42, of Middleton was arrested and jailed on one count of Possession of Child Pornography.

This incident is NOT related to the the investigation taking place at Middleton High School in which students were sharing nude photos.

Smoothie King Robbed at Gunpoint

MIDDLETON–On Feb. 27, just before 6 p.m. the Middleton Police Department responded to the report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at Smoothie King, 2019 Deming Way, in the City of Middleton. 

Employees described the suspect as white male, approximately 5’10” tall, wearing a dark hooded coat, glasses, blue jeans, and a winter hat. He also had a blonde beard. A handgun was displayed during the robbery. There were no injuries reported and the suspect left the business on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. 

The Middleton Police Department is asking anyone who may have information or witnessed this incident to contact the police department at 608-824-7300, tipster line at 608-824-7304, or text at 608-824-7300.

Mayoral, Supreme Court Candidates Advance to General Election

DANE COUNTY–Middleton and Dane County voters went to the primary on Tuesday to choose candidates for Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge and Middleton mayor.

In the mayoral primary incumbent Gurdip Brar and Plan Commissioner Kurt Paulsen received the most votes and will advance to the Spring Election in April. Brar received the most votes at 51.5 percent and Paulsen got 30.8 percent. Middleton Common Council President Dan Ramsey II did not advance to the Spring Election, and received 17.6 percent of votes.

Ethics Board Hears First Complaint

MIDDLETON – The city’s Ethics Board met Monday to review the first-ever complaint filed with the year-old body and decided it needed more information.

The seven-member board consists of five residents appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Middleton Common Council, one council member, and the city’s human resources manager.

The board was established last year to investigate citizen complaints against city employees alleging conduct that violates the Code of Ethics.

Letters, Sister’s Urging Lead to Over 60 Years of Marriage for Cashwells

CROSS PLAINS–Although the couple didn’t know it at the start, the deluge of snail mail letters, written in cursive, carefully folded into an envelope, affixed with a lick-able stamp and placed in the mailbox for delivery, were actually intercepted and shot from Cupid’s arrow–aided and abetted by a persistent matchmaker. For four years, so many letters traveled the nearly 800 miles between New Bedford, MA and Raleigh, NC that neither Marilyn Andrews nor Dick Cashwell bothered counting.

Both are now 83 and have been happily married for 61 years.

DA Declines Prosecution in Doll Case

MADISON–A Middleton man arrested Feb. 12 for Possession of Child Pornography was released from custody on Feb. 14 after the Dane County District Attorney declined to prosecute the case.

Steven R. Doll, 42, was arrested by Middleton police after a search executed at a residence in the 1800 block of Park Street. Police received a tip in December from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a Middleton resident who was possibly in possession of child pornography, according to Middleton police.

Asked why Doll wasn’t charged, District Attorney Ismael R. Ozanne said “The facts…as referred by the Middleton Police Department didn’t capture the spirit of the law.”

However, the case against Doll isn’t necessarily closed.

Arrest Made in Nicholas Day Murder

MT. HOREB–The Dane County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday afternoon that a suspect is in custody in the Jan. 15 homicide of Nicholas Day, 26, on CTH JG in the town of Blue Mounds.

Riley Berg, 21, of Mt. Horeb, was taken into custody by Dane County Sheriff’s detectives on Thursday evening, Feb. 13 in Mt. Horeb. He is currently being held in the Dane County Jail on a tentative charge of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide.

The motive for the killing is still unclear, and at this point, a connection between the victim and the suspect is unknown. This continues to be an active investigation and the Sheriff’s Office would like to hear from anyone who knows Berg and may have information on a connection to Day or on Berg’s activities/behavior before and after the homicide. Investigators can be reached through our tip line at 608-284-6900. Deputies and detectives will continue to have a presence in the area as they follow-up on information.

MHS Students Allegedly Share Nude Photos

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Police Department (MIPD) began investigating an incident alleging Middleton High School (MHS)students shared nude photos of students under the age of 18. 

The investigation started on Feb. 11 after police were notified of the photo sharing. In a press release sent out by the department on Feb. 13, MIPD stated, “The Middleton Police Department is working directly with the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) to identify students who may have been victimized or were involved in sharing these pictures.”

In an email sent to MHS parents, the district attached the release sent by police. The MCPASD message is as follows:

On Tuesday, we were made aware of an investigation by the Middleton Police Department of some MHS students. Middleton Police issued a news release, which is below, earlier today.

Welton Sentenced to Four Years for Sexually Assaulting Two Girls

MADISON–A Middleton man found guilty of sex assault of two young girls occurring about 10 years apart in Harbor Athletic swimming pools was sentenced Monday to four years in prison and four years extended supervision.

The sentence Dane County Circuit Judge Susan Crawford imposed on Kevin D. Welton, 59, was less than half of what the prosecution or victims’ family members sought.
