MIDDLETON–The Middleton Police Department (MIPD) began investigating an incident alleging Middleton High School (MHS)students shared nude photos of students under the age of 18.

The investigation started on Feb. 11 after police were notified of the photo sharing. In a press release sent out by the department on Feb. 13, MIPD stated, “The Middleton Police Department is working directly with the Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) to identify students who may have been victimized or were involved in sharing these pictures.”

In an email sent to MHS parents, the district attached the release sent by police. The MCPASD message is as follows:

On Tuesday, we were made aware of an investigation by the Middleton Police Department of some MHS students. Middleton Police issued a news release, which is below, earlier today.

We have been and will continue to cooperate with Middleton Police as they continue their investigation. We have also been working tirelessly to support our students who have been impacted by the investigation.

We would encourage you or your child if you have any information that could be beneficial to the investigation to contact the Middleton Police Department.

We also know this has been a very emotional week for our students so please encourage your child to seek out our student services staff if they need additional support.

There have also been lots of questions regarding consequences. Middleton Police will determine what, if any, charges will be brought. Our Code of Conduct and Athletic Handbook also identify potential consequences for students.

"We are not sure exactly how many kids are involved yet or how long this has been going on. Those are all things that are still being investigated," Captain Jeremy Gieszler told the TImes-Tribune, via email.

Minutes after the district announcement, a notification went out from MIPD, stating the following:

“Due to the scope of this incident, the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has taken the lead in this investigation. Anyone with information can still contact the Middleton Police Department’s School Resource Officer at 608-829-9665 and it will be routed to the appropriate investigators.”
