It’s probable that the best is yet to come for Middleton’s girls gymnastics team.

For now, the present isn't too bad whatsoever.

The Cardinals are currently without two injured varsity performers — and hope to get them back later this month.

In the meantime, Middleton is hanging tough.

The Cardinals went to the Mount Horeb Invite last Saturday and finished second in the division for larger schools.

Whitefish Bay won the team title with 138.375 points, while Middleton 131.1, Sun Prairie 129.775, Verona/Madison Edgewood 128.8 and  Waunakee/DeForest 126.425 rounded out the top five at the seven-team invite.

“Two of our varsity gymnasts (Lucy Hellenbrand and Jayden Mathias) are out with injuries hoping to return in January,” Middleton coach Kari Steck said. “So that will definitely make a big difference in our team score.

“Unfortunately, competitions don't stop for injured gymnasts, but in the meantime we have girls who have really stepped up to fill the gaps. That's obvious by the increase in our team score from the last meet to this week.”

Middleton sophomore Megg Weiler finished fourth in the all-around competition with a 33.975 score. Junior Taylor Engelkes was sixth (33.375), junior Emily Bernd was 11th (30.60) and freshman Lexi Quartaro was 14th (30.10).

Weiler finished first on the uneven bars (8.60), while sophomore Ella Mock was sixth (8.10), Engelkes was eighth (7.950) and Bernd was 16th (7.175).

Weiler was fourth on the balance beam (8.80), while Mock was ninth (8.450), Engelkes was 14th (8.20) and Bernd was 26th (7.30).

Engelkes was fourth on the vault (8.825), while Weiler was ninth (8.450), Quartaro was 18th (8.150) and Bernd was 23rd (8.10).

And on the floor exercise, Quartaro was ninth (8.450), Engelkes was 10th (8.40), Weiler was 13th (8.125) and Bernd was 16th (8.025).

“We want to see a growth in scores over the season, as I think it shows the girls are constantly improving and working hard to add difficulty to their routines,” Steck said. “That's just what is happening with this group. I'd anticipate the scores to continue to rise. We've got a great group of girls this year, and strong leadership that is encouraging and motivating.”
