Softball Cardinals win regional title

Erin Schleusner is what’s known as a “green light kid.”

That means Schleusner — Middleton’s senior center fielder — has earned the trust of manager Brittany Carl and has the “green light” to choose when to attack on the bases.

Last Friday afternoon, Schleusner picked the perfect time.

Middleton and Verona were deadlocked, 3-3, in the top of the seventh inning of their WIAA Division 1 regional final. With Schleusner on third base and one out, sophomore second baseman Mackenzie Zimmerman hit a ball that trickled just a few feet in front of home plate.

Verona catcher Ellie Osting looked Schleusner’s way, then threw down to first for the out. With the ball in the air, Schleusner headed for home and beat the throw back to Osting by a nano-second.

That run proved to be the difference in Middleton’s 4-3 win that gave the Cardinals their first regional championship since 2014.

Golfers win regional title

Perfect timing.

And it’s about time.

At the conclusion of the WIAA Division 1 Madison West boys golf regional Tuesday, these were the two prevailing thoughts of Middleton head coach Tom Cabalka.

After trying to get his team to all play their best on the same given day all season, the Cardinals stepped up in their biggest round of the year.

Middleton shot a season-low 296 and won the regional held at Odana Hills Golf Course by four shots over Waunakee (300). Third-place Madison Memorial (303) and fourth place Verona (310) also qualified for the Onalaska Sectional, which will be held June 1 at La Crosse Country Club.

“It was just so good to have everybody play well on the same day,” Cabalka said. “We had three really good scores … and then to get a really solid score from our fourth golfer was huge.”

Softball Cards survive, advance

At first glance, an illness-depleted Middleton softball team wasn’t sure what to expect in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal game at Firefighters’ Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Turns out the Cardinals were up for the challenge — and then some.

Senior pitcher Bailey Flock scattered four hits, and Middleton ripped 16 hits to rout La Crosse Central, 13-2, in a game that was called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Sixth-seeded Middleton (16-10) advanced to play at third-seeded Verona (17-4) in a regional championship game on Thursday at 5 p.m.

With manager Brittany Carl and several players sidelined due to an illness that swept through the team last week, interim manager Scott Hammer took over running the team, and the Cardinals shuffled the lineup.

Senior shortstop Jenna Redders said that provided the Cardinals with plenty of motivation.

Baseball Cardinals receive No. 4 seed

The path won't be easy.

And it could include a matchup with the defending state champs.

But Middleton’s baseball team believes it can make some noise this postseason.

The Cardinals received the No. 4 seed in their sectional and host 13th-seeded Tomah in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal on May 31 at 5 p.m. If Middleton wins there, it would host either fifth-seeded La Crosse Central or 12th-seeded Holmen on June 2 in a regional final.

Sectionals are June 7 in Waunakee.

Sun Prairie, which won the state title last year, is the No. 1 seed. Verona is the No. 2 seed and Waunakee is seeded third.

“I think we ended up right where we should have based on our regular season,” Middleton manager Brent Jorgensen said. “We can beat any team in our sectional if we play to our standard. It's our job to make sure we are playing at that standard by May 31.”

Middleton 29ers rout Waunakee

Middleton’s Home Talent League team rolled past Waunakee, 11-1, on Sunday.

The 29ers led just 2-1 in the eighth when they erupted for nine runs to end things.

“This was a good battle for us,” Middleton manager Brandon Hellenbrand said. “It took a while to get going, but we were able to break out in the eighth.”

Brandon Scheidler led Middleton’s offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Brennan Schmitt was 2-for-4. Both Josh Hinson and Jacob Ross were also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Middleton took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Scheidler’s RBI single plated Nolan Dunn. Waunakee evened things up in the sixth, but in the bottom of the seventh, Brady Schmitt’s bases loaded walk brought home Brennan Schmitt and gave Middleton a 2-1 lead.

The 29ers then erupted for nine runs in the eighth.

Josh Hinson started the scoring with a RBI single and Drew Farrell eventually ended the game with a bases clearing double to bring home the last three runs.

Black Earth knocks off Ashton

ASHTON – Once right-hander Derrick Rothwell settles in, Home Talent League hitters know they have their work cut out for them.

Rothwell threw five strong innings for the host Ashton A’s against the Black Earth Bombers in a Home Talent League contest last Sunday.

But Black Earth capitalized on four errors and used a five-run seventh inning to pull away for an 8-4 victory over Ashton on a brisk, spring afternoon in a Northern Section Eastern Division game.

Black Earth right-hander Bryce Hopwood pitched six innings to pick up the victory, while veteran Jason Schreiber delivered a two-run single to help the Bombers rally from an early deficit.

“It’s early, we’re not quite where we want to be, but that will pick up,” Rothwell said of the A’s offense and defense. “Black Earth did a nice job of making the plays when they needed to be made, and we did not. That was the difference in the game today.”

Soccer Cards face rough road

The road is extremely daunting.

But Middleton’s girls soccer team knows it’s certainly capable of making some noise.

The Cardinals received the No. 10 seed in their WIAA Division 1 sectional and travel to seventh-seeded Oconomowoc for a regional semifinal on May 31. If Middleton pulls the upset, it would likely travel to second-seeded Kettle Moraine for a regional final on June 4.

The sectional semifinals are June 9 and the sectional finals are June 11.

Waunakee is the No. 1 seed in the sectional, followed by Kettle Moraine, Verona, Madison West, Madison Memorial, Waukesha South, Oconomowoc, Mukwonago, Sun Prairie, Middleton, Madison East, Janesville Craig, Badger, Beloit Memorial, Madison La Follette and Janesville Parker.
