Middleton hammers Madison Memorial

MADISON — Soaking wet, covered in grass and mud, Middleton’s football team wasn’t looking for the nearest shower last Friday night.

Instead, the Cardinals raced to their locker room, then belted out songs like they were auditioning for The Monteverdi Choir.

Euphoria. Ecstasy. Bliss. And lots of singing.

That’s what you get when you beat one of your arch rivals, one that’s just 2.8 miles from your campus.

Middleton went to Madison Memorial, dominated from start to finish, and left Mansfield Stadium with its most impressive win of the year — a 44-6 dismantling of the Spartans.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” said Middleton senior standout Cole Toennies. “There’s nothing like it. All through youth they had beaten us. Just about every game they beat us. But right here, when it matters most, we took care of business. That’s what matters most.”

Boys soccer team is rolling

MADISON – After watching the Middleton Cardinals varsity reserve team pull out a last second victory, senior Chris Vanden Boom knew it was up to the varsity squad to do its part to duplicate the feat.

Mission accomplished.

Vanden Boom headed in a corner kick from senior Tim Browning in the final minute to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over host Madison West in a Big Eight Conference boys soccer game at Madison College last Thursday.

“I was hoping we’d get one last shot,” said Browning, whose corner kick a few minutes earlier had just missed on setting up the go-ahead goal. “In the last minute, we had to pull it off. I gave a cross right into Boomer. He headed it in, great goal. It was a great finish.”

Girls golfers hoist Big 8 crown

In every day life, the term dynasty is defined as “a succession of people from the same family who play a prominent role in business, politics, or another field.”

In the Big Eight girls golf, the term dynasty can be summed up in one word — Middleton.

The Cardinals won their sixth straight conference championship last Thursday, rolling to the title at Evansville Golf Club.

Middleton shot a 328 and easily outdistanced runner-up Sun Prairie (365). Janesville Craig (396), Madison West (406) and Verona (419) rounded out the top five.

Middleton, the state’s top-ranked team, has yet to lose a match this season.

“Six in a row is an amazing accomplishment for our program,” said Becky Halverson, who has been Middleton’s coach for all six conference titles.

Boys spikers shine at own invite

Middleton’s boys volleyball team is currently ranked No. 5 in the latest Wisconsin Boys Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

And the Cardinals continue to show why they’re held in such lofty regard.

Middleton reached the semifinals of its own star-studded invite last Saturday before losing to No. 1 Kaukauna, 25-19, 25-19. The tournament featured 10 of the top-13 teams in the state and the Cardinals went 4-2 overall.

“Overall it was a good day for our guys,” Middleton coach Rob Kleinschmidt said. “Finishing third in this tournament is very good, since the other top finishers were the No. 1, 2, and 3 ranked teams in the state. The guys showed a lot of good things.”

Middleton opened by going 2-1 in pool play.

The Cardinals defeated Appleton West, 25-20, 25-19 and toppled Brookfield Central, 25-13, 25-16. Middleton then fell to No. 3 Muskego, 25-19, 25-21.

Cross country teams excel at Griak

The Roy Griak Invitational is one of the largest cross country events in the country.

Every year, many of the country’s top runners descend onto the University of Minnesota campus to see where they fare against the best of the best.

Middleton’s cross country teams had to like what they saw after competing there last Friday.

The Cardinals’ girls finished in second place out of 45 teams. Middleton’s boys finished 17th out of 48 teams.

“The girls were surprised and excited to place second at Griak,” Middleton coach Alexa Richardson said. “I was hoping for top-three as a team, but didn't give them any team expectations beforehand.”

Middleton boys coach Brian Finnel was just as happy.

“The Griak was a great experience for the team,” Finnel said. “I know they had fun being there and enjoyed it. The atmosphere is top-notch, certainly rivaling the state meet.
