Local Dentist Aims to Revolutionize Industry with No-Drill Treatment

MIDDLETON–Middleton Dentist Dr. Chris Kammer established Victorious Dental at 8313 Greenway Blvd, Ste. 20 to focus on an alternative approach to dental care which treats tooth decay and preserves teeth rather than the more conventional method of drilling and filling them.

Kammer has been a dentist in Madison and Middleton for decades and says he has done just about everything in the field. About 15 years ago he became interested in the connection between mouth health and overall health. Kammer was fascinated by the correlation between poor dental health and increased risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Kammer founded an organization called the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health, which is made up of health professionals dedicated to expanding awareness of the relationship between oral health and whole-body health. Kammer says about 1000 people attend the annual meetings.

Middleton Market Developers Not Deterred by Delay

MIDDLETON–Delayed by not deterred, the co-developer of the Middleton Market looks forward to leasing apartments by February and opening the area’s “first of its kind” food hall/market later next summer.

The approximately $42 million mixed-use development at 7622 Lisa Lane, displaces the Bowling Green baseball diamonds on the city’s north side. However, it will add a European-style food hall and 263 apartments, said Robin Pharo, owner of Treysta Group, which is co-developing the project with Cardinal Capital Management.

The COVID pandemic slowed construction progress this year as limitations were put on the number of workers at the site and materials were in short supply, but Pharo hopes having an effective vaccine should help restore the economy next year.

“The food hall market vendors are on hold due to COVID. A bunch had signed up but…no one is making firm commitments, everyone is waiting for the restrictions and COVID to be gone,” she said.

Board Recall Petition Fails

MIDDLETON–A petition to recall Middleton Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) board members Minza Karim and Bob Hesselbein has fallen short on signatures.

Angela Rachidi, one of the organizers of the group Parents for Change who filed to begin the petition for recall, said the group gathered about half of the 6,200 signatures it needed to force a recall election. “Pandemic-related restrictions on gatherings really hampered our efforts,” Rachidi said.

Parents for changed organized and filed paperwork for the petition with the Wisconsin Elections commission on October 8 and had 60 days to collect the necessary signatures, which is equivalent to 25 percent of the electors in the last gubernatorial election.

Swimmers thinking big — if they have a season

Danny Lynam knows his team might be overlooked.

They might be disregarded, discounted, ignored.

And that’s just fine with Middleton’s boys swimming and diving coach.

The Cardinals graduated an enormous amount of talent from the group that won the WIAA Division 1 state title in February. And if Middleton eventually has a season, Lynam and the Cardinals have no problem being the hunter instead of the hunted.

“I think a lot of people would have counted us out. However, I think we could surprise a number of people with the success we would have,” Lynam said. “When you have a team as large and deep as ours you always have the next group of guys ready to go.

“We have a number of guys that get pushed down or overlooked, just because we have so much depth at the top end. In a normal year there are guys swimming JV that would normally be varsity on most other teams in our conference, and with so many spots to fill, this would be their year to shine.”

Gymnasts hoping for chance to strut their stuff

Kari Steck took over Middleton’s girls gymnastics program in 2010.

The past decade has seen tremendous success and growth.

The Cardinals have been to the WIAA Division 1 state tournament eight times. Middleton has three top-five finishes at state in that time.

And the Cardinals have crowned a pair of individual state champions — Karina Sabol in the vault (2018) and Madeline Pflasterer-Jennerjohn in the uneven bars (2017).

Now, Steck is simply crossing her fingers that her 11th season will take place.

While teams across the state began practicing Nov. 16 and many will have their first meets this week, things are on hold at MHS. Public Health Madison & Dane County issued Emergency Order #10 on Nov. 17, which prohibits indoor gatherings of any size.

While Steck is optimistic her team will eventually have a season, the Cardinals are currently in a holding pattern.

Pfizer Vaccine Anticipated Next Week, Distribution to Follow

MADISON–The buzz about the approval and release of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and later the Moderna vaccine, may leave many feeling a sting. The Pfizer vaccine, which is expected to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as early as next week, will see slow distribution and just under 50,000 doses for the state in its first shipment.

In a video call in for reporters on Monday, Wisconsin Deputy Health Secretary at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) Julie Willems Van Dyke and Dr. Stephanie Schauer, program director of the Wisconsin Immunization Program said that 49,725 doses of the vaccine, which requires deep freezing, will be in the first round. It is unknown how many will follow in the second round.

MHS' girls basketball team is hoping for a chance to show its stuff

When you saw them last, Middleton’s girls basketball team was on the brink of the first WIAA Division 1 state championship in school history.

The Cardinals had reached the state tournament and were the No. 1 seed. Then, the WIAA cancelled the state tournament due to fears surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, Middleton head coach Jeff Kind is simply hoping people will get a chance to see his team play in the 2020-21 season.

While teams across the state began practicing Nov. 16 and many have already had multiple games, things are on hold at MHS. Public Health Madison & Dane County issued Emergency Order #10 on Nov. 17, which prohibits indoor gatherings of any size.

While Kind is optimistic his team will eventually have a season, the Cardinals are currently in a holding pattern.

Boys basketball team has high hopes — if they have a season

One contact day.

One marvelous, glorious, socially distanced contact day.

That’s what Middleton’s boys basketball team experienced last month before Public Health Madison & Dane County issued Emergency Order #10, which has prohibited indoor gatherings of any size.

In that short amount of time, Cardinals coach Kevin Bavery saw what he anticipated all summer — he has a team that could surprise.

Now, if Middleton can get clearance to have some type of season, Bavery and the Cardinals believe big things could await.

“The biggest challenge of course is not seeing any of these players since last March,” Bavery said. “The brief glimpse we had with one contact day before we paused as a district showed us that a lot of players have changed physically.
