Stories

I was interviewing a woman last week, when she said several things that struck me, like fists of gentle profundity. She was talking about 2020, but unlike so many people, she was laughing. Not an insecure guffaw or an affected chuckle, but a real laugh that bubbled up again and again, in the manner of the pure white froth on a freshly poured flute of champagne.

“Stories are like prisms,” she said. “They allow us to see different perspectives.” These stories, she added, “work their magic” upon us, time and time again.

Postal Limbo

Not one, not two, but six packages that I sent more than a week ago seem to be lost in postal limbo. Some of these packages just contain a variety of candy that I spent an entire Saturday crafting. Each year I send tins full of treats to my relatives and, in I have no idea how many years, they have never been lost.

In addition to the treats, which are not that big of deal, it’s the other presents, which included some holiday gifts and also my brother’s birthday present that I am displeased about. These are the items that will have to be replaced and will not make it in time for either his birthday or maybe even Jesus’.

Joyce Elizabeth Howard

MIDDLETON–Joyce Elizabeth Howard, age 96, entered into Heaven on Dec. 12, 2020. Joyce was born on the family farm in Wilson Creek on July 18, 1924, to LeRoy “Roy” and Stella (Jones) Radel. She was one of nine children who cherished her siblings. They were very close and spent a great deal of time telling stories and laughing. She was the Wisconsin State Dairy Queen in 1942, traveling the US to promote the dairy industry.

Joyce married Chester Howard on Nov. 21, 1943. They celebrated 71 years of marriage before his passing in 2015. Chet and Joyce raised two children in Middleton. She loved her family and God’s word. She was a powerful prayer warrior. She taught Sunday school and participated in woman’s fellowship and bible studies over the years. She was a Proverbs 31 woman: of noble character, speaks with wisdom and clothed in strength and dignity. Joyce had no fear of leaving this world, as she knew she was going home to be with her Savior.

Santa Coming to Middleton

MIDDLETON–On Dec. 19 starting at 12 p.m., Middleton First Responders will escort Santa, himself, through the city. The small neighborhood parade using a route similar to the August first responder parade, will give kids a chance to see Santa during the pandemic, since in person Santa visits are limited this year.

Come out and wave to Santa and your local first responders as they travel through your neighborhood. The route will start and end at the police department, and travel in the direction of the arrow in the map. An interactive map can be found at https://bit.ly/MiddletonSantaParade, so you can see the exact route Santa will be taking.

Due to COVID 19 concerns, please follow social distancing and face covering recommendations.

School to Shift Reopening Plan Due to New Guidance from PHMDC

MIDDLETON–The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District Board of Education is poised to adopt a new plan for students to return to in-person instruction in light of new guidance released for schools by Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) at its Dec. 21 meeting. District administration asked the board for one week to review the guidance and develop a virtual/in-person blended model for all students.

The guidance from PHMDC was released hours before the board’s Dec. 7 meeting and shifts the direction the district will go in implementing a virtual/in-person blended instruction model. The change comes one week after the board approved a half-day blended model for students in grades 4K-2.

Superintendent Dana Monogue said the newly released guidance is significantly different than the guidance the district has been operating under since August.

If there’s a hockey season, Middleton believes it can shine

There are no promises.

No guarantees.

So Middleton hockey coach Dan Truehl is searching for four-leaf clovers and stockpiling horseshoes — anything to give the Cardinals some luck.

Public Health Madison & Dane County issued Emergency Order #10 on Nov. 17, which prohibits indoor gatherings of any size. That order ended on Dec. 16, and Truehl was optimistic that at that point, his team could begin doing socially-distanced workouts again.

If the Cardinals showed the ability to do that successfully, perhaps they could eventually have some type of season.
