The Great Depression had a profound impact on Lois. She and her brother lived alone in an old shack during the winter of 1931 to 1932 when she was 13 and Bob was 10. She complained of the ceiling plaster falling into the bread dough she was making on one occasion.

MHS Theatre Presents ‘War of the Worlds’

MIDDLETON–In a year in which district students have less access to clubs and activities, Middleton High School (MHS) Theatre has been working to center student self-expression during uncertain times. Like so many educators and artists, MHS Theatre Director Katrina Williams Brunner, Performing Arts Center Director Zane Enloe and frequent MHS Theatre guest director Tim Gittings of American Players Theatre find themselves in the position of learning flexibility.

“Our goal,” says Brunner, in her third year as MHS Theatre Director, “is to stay creative and collaborative along the way.”

The 2020-21 MHS Theatre theme “Out of Chaos” references Steven Sondheim, the lyricist and composer who has explored a rich diversity of material in his complex productions. Sondheim himself experienced some very difficult events in his childhood, later reflecting that, “Art, in itself, is an attempt to bring order out of chaos.”

Airport Turns to Goats to Clear Invasives

MIDDLETON–Some unlikely workers showed up at the Middleton Municipal Airport-Morey Field in October to clear invasive species on the property–a group of goats from Vegetation Solutions in Muscoda.

The idea for goats to clear the brush at the airport came from volunteer Kara Randall who was tasked with removing overgrowth. “When I got out there, I realized we were doing something much bigger than one person or a couple could handle,” said Randall.

After living in the Caribbean and seeing goats clear areas that were difficult to reach or environmentally sensitive, Randall began to do some research. She found that Chicago O’Hare International Airport was using goats as groundskeepers and began calling companies that provided the service. She ended up connecting with Vegetation Solutions, who by coincidence was the company proving the service to O’Hare.

City Council Expands MERL Funding

City Council Expands MERL Funding

MIDDLETON–The Middleton Common Council voted to triple the amount of funding for the city’s low interest loan program to assist businesses struggling due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The council approved the $200,000 increase in response to a surge in the number of applicants.

The council also approved an agreement to receive a grant to reimburse expenses for marketing and promotion for businesses related to the pandemic.

The program titled Middleton Economic Relief Loan or MERL was established in collaboration with Middleton Area Development Corporation (MADC). Both the city and MADC have now committed $300,000 to the program. The city’s portion will be covered by a State Trust Fund Loan program.

City Administrator Mike Davis said the number of applications is now up to 20, which equates to about $500,000 in loan requests.

Common Ground

I am not going to call for unity in the wake of this debacle of a presidential election. It seems too trite, simplistic and cliché to implement in a country that is divided in half.

That is not to say, however, that I don’t think we need to work together to find common ground because I think we fundamentally all want the same things as Americans. We want food, shelter, health care, education, religious freedom, living wages, a means of retirement and peace, just for starters. But it isn’t just Americans that want those things, people the world over wish for the same.

MADISON–In a statewide address on Tuesday night, Gov. Tony Evers asked Wisconsin residents to unify against COVID-19 before issuing Executive order #94, advising people to stay home.

Evers gave statistics on COVID-19 infections in the state and on the day of the address, 7,000 new cases were reported about with 66 deaths and 291 hospitalizations. At this time nearly 2,500 people in the state have died from the virus, and with current infection rates, Evers said that number could double by Jan. 1, 2021 if nothing is done He also noted that it took seven months to reach the first 100,000 infections, but only 36 days to double that number to 200,000. Evers said at this rate, it will only take 20 days to add an additional 100,000 cases.

In his address he urged Wisconsinites to stay home, even though the holidays are approaching, “We must get back to the basics of fighting this virus just like we did last spring, and it starts at home.
