Running in Remission: White to run half marathon as fundraiser for Gilda's Club

Ben White never let himself look too far ahead.

White stayed in the moment. He seized the day.

And as each new morning arrived, he began the same process over.

Today, White still doesn’t look too far ahead. On Sunday, though, he will look back.

White, Middleton’s assistant athletic director, was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma on Sept. 13, 2019. Today, White is in remission.

To celebrate what White has overcome in the past year, he’ll run a half marathon Sunday — the one-year anniversary of his cancer diagnosis — through Middleton. The run will also serve as a fundraiser for Gilda’s Club Madison, which White said provided invaluable emotional support during his fight.

Fab Four: Weiss, Wieland brothers golf 626 holes in a single day for charity

Alex Weiss, a 15-year-old from Middleton, started the fun several years ago.

Two years ago, his pal Brett Wieland of Milton who’s also 15, joined the party.

And this year, little brothers Luke Weiss (12) and Kade Wieland (11), came to the festivities.

In the end, the Wisconsin PGA Junior Foundation did the most celebrating.

This Fabulous Foursome teamed up on Aug. 24 and played more than 600 holes of golf on one day at Oak Ridge Golf Course in Milton. The quartet raised money for the Wisconsin PGA Junior Foundation, and that total currently at $4,642.

“The Wisconsin Junior PGA Foundation (holds) junior golf tournaments for kids of all ages and provide scholarships for kids that wouldn’t otherwise be able to participate in these events,” Alex Weiss recently told Wisconsin.Golf. “We have played in the Wisconsin Junior PGA tournaments for many years and it’s been an incredible experience for us, especially during COVID-19.”

Northbound Parmenter Street to Close

MIDDLETON–As part of the Conservancy Bend development, contractors will need to close northbound Parmenter Street near the roundabout for two weeks beginning Sept. 8. This will not affect southbound Parmenter Street, and access will be maintained to all nearby businesses. The contractor will sign a detour route for northbound Parmenter Street to follow Franklin Avenue, Park Lawn Place, Park Street and Donna Drive.

The contractor will replace the concrete curb and provide a permanent asphalt patch on the street by Sept. 18 before opening the road to traffic again.  In the event of significant rain delays, duration of the temporary closure and detour may be extended.Northbound Parmenter Street to close

Moonstruck

It was 1974 when the moon was last full on Halloween. I was just seven years old, and I remember it well.

You see, I have always had a strong connection to the moon. I can’t explain it, but I have always been drawn to the moon, to the tide, to the cycle of waning and waxing each month, sometimes twice in a month in the case of a blue moon.

Anyway, I remember the full moon that night because I was completely enamored of it. I could not stop looking at it. I remember my aunt had taken me trick or treating in the tiny town of Somerset Center, MI, where my great-grandmother lived. We had stopped at her house when we got to town to show off my Wonder Woman costume, another of my obsessions at the time.

When we walked out of Grandma Clark’s house, I could see it big and low on the horizon, in all its glowing and mesmerizing glory. I could not stop looking at the bright orb in the sky, so close it seemed you could reach out and touch it.

DiMiceli Wanted Job Back

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–Greg DiMiceli sought reinstatement last Friday as Town of Middleton Administrator but asked just a few hours too late.

DiMiceli surprised many when he tendered his resignation on Aug. 12, but asked to be kept on until August 28, which the town board readily accepted. DiMiceli evidently changed his mind and asked to have his resignation rescinded and be allowed to serve as administrator until Dec. 31.

Unfortunately, DiMiceli emailed his request at 2:01 p,m. on August 28, past the close of business on that day, which being a Friday, was noon, said Town Chair Cynthia Richson.

DiMiceli was hired as town administrator/treasurer in Jan. 2019.

Richson explained that the town treasurer is a statuary position and Town Attorney Eileen Brownlee advised that DiMiceli’s change of heart came too late.

On Monday, board members considered rehiring DiMiceli as administrator and appoint Deputy Treasurer Meaghan Hughes as town treasurer.

Born to Arlene and Virgil Housner on February 24, 1947 at Richland Center Hospital, Roger spent the majority of his life in the Madison area. Most notable were the nearly 40 years he spent in Cross Plains with his late wife, Connie Mae Housner, raising their three sons. An active member in his community and children’s lives, Roger was a Cross Plains Jaycee and youth soccer coach for many years.

Robert J. “Bob” Westphal

CROSS PLAINS- Robert J. “Bob” Westphal, of Cross Plains, was called to rest on Aug. 29, 2020, surrounded by his wife and family after 95 years of a life well-lived. He was born on July 26, 1925, to Otto and Helen (Parman) Westphal at home in the Town of Berry. Following a successful blind date, Bob married Lorraine Greenheck in 1947. By each other's side for over 73 years, they raised six children and stayed strong in their faith.

Bob was a lifelong farmer who worked hard, a husband who loved his wife, a father who loved his children and a neighbor who was always there to lend a hand. Many knew Bob from his long-time livestock trucking business and farming days in Cross Plains and Soldiers Grove.

More recently, Bob enjoyed going for drives, feeding his orioles, and talking about the good ol’ days with family, friends and the Saturday breakfast crew. His familiar stories were always time-stamped with the year of whatever Model-T or tractor was involved.

Plan Commission Approves TID#3 Amendment, Concept for New Development

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission approved a resolution that would subtract $163 million of value from the city's tax increment financing district #3. The action, if approved by the city council and TIF district Joint Review Board, would return $100 million to all tax districts to reduce property taxes and invest $63 million into infrastructure projects in TID#3.

The Plan Commission also granted concept approval for two duplexes proposed at 7103 Twin Sunset Rd.

The city’s TIF consultant Scott Harrington from Vandewalle & Associates said TIF is the single most powerful economic development tool that communities have and Middleton’s TID#3 is one of the most successful in the state.
