Boys baseball team had great expectations

Editor’s Note: The WIAA recently canceled spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Times-Tribune, we’d like to give recognition to the athletes and coaches who had their seasons stopped prematurely.

So over the next few weeks, we’ll run a series of stories on the teams that didn’t get a chance to perform in 2020.

Brent Jorgensen wasn’t about to go “Broadway” Joe Namath.

But that type of proclamation might have been apropos.

In 1969, Namath — a brash, young quarterback for the New York Jets — “guaranteed” his team would defeat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. The Jets, an 18-point underdog, went on to stun the Colts and the rest of the football world with a 16-7 win.

Jorgensen, Middleton’s baseball manager, saw that his team was picked to finish in the middle of the Big Eight Conference this season. Jorgensen channeled his inner-Namath, but stopped short of any guarantees.

Girls softball team had high hopes for 2020

Editor’s Note: The WIAA recently canceled spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Times-Tribune, we’d like to give recognition to the athletes and coaches who had their seasons stopped prematurely.

So over the next few weeks, we’ll run a series of stories on the teams that didn’t get a chance to perform in 2020.

This was not how Brittany Carl envisioned her first season as Middleton’s softball coach would go.

Not even close.

Carl, a former collegiate standout at Seton Hall, was named the Cardinals’ new head coach last summer. In the time since, she worked tirelessly to get a Middleton ready to shine in 2020.

Of course, Carl and the Cardinals never received that chance.

The WIAA voted, 10-1, to cancel all spring sports on April 21 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Former MHS star Herb named all-American

Former Middleton High School standout Emmet Herb, who now plays at St. Thomas (Minn.), was named an all-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America. (GCAA).

This marker the third time Herb earned all-American honors, matching the program record of three received by Alex Kapraun (2012-16). This also marked the seventh time in the last nine seasons the Tommies have had an All-America honoree.

Herb, the Tommies’ captain, helped St. Thomas win four of seven tournaments in the fall 2019 season, including the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship for the third year in a row.

St. Thomas was ranked in the top-six nationally in the coaches' rankings and in the GolfStat computer rankings. The Tommies had already qualified for the NCAA Championships in May when the spring season was canceled in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Stay at Home Protest Draws Large Crowd to Capitol

Thousands of people turned out at the Wisconsin statehouse in Madison to protest Gov. Tony Evers’ Safer at Home order on April 24, the original date the order was scheduled to end. The protest lasted for about two hours, beginning at 1 p.m. In addition to the large group gathering on the lawn, dozens of vehicles crept around Capitol Square waving flags cheering and honking. A handful counter protesters were also on hand. Speakers came from around Wisconsin to share experiences and opinions as evidence for not extending the order, which is in place until May 26. The new order did loosen some restrictions, but ask people to stay at home whenever possible. The Wisconsin Supreme Court is set to rule on the legality of the extension this week.

Town Property Assessments Likely to Climb

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–Residents will see much larger property evaluations this summer, perhaps by $100,000 or more, due to a state-required re-evaluation of properties in the town,

Town Administration Greg DiMiceli said his assessment increased by $100,000, according to the Access Dane website, and Town chair Cynthia Richson said hers went up $111,000.

A call to Town Assessor Paul Musser regarding the hike in assessments wasn’t returned by deadline.

At Monday’s town board meeting, DiMiceli explained that the town assessor determines property values and that most of the property in the town is expected to increase as the town needed to conduct a property re-evaluation.

The Department of Administration requires each municipality to be within 10 percent of market value of taxable property once every five years. Assessed values are used to distribute the municipality’s tax burden among the individual property owners.

Plan Commission Sends Airport Improvement List to Council, Gives Negative Recommendation on 14-Story Apartment Complex

MIDDLETON–Community members showed up in person, by phone and via the Internet for an April 14 public hearing during the Middleton Plan Commission meeting.

The hearing was to discuss a resolution concerning improvements at the Middleton Airport/Morey Field over the next five years. The plan is required by the Board of Aeronautics (BOA), and must be submitted every six years. Middleton last updated the plan in 2014.

One point of contention with residents had been the language in the original resolution, which included use of eminent domain for land acquisition. City planner and zoning administrator Mark Opitz stated that the wording was simply boilerplate language provided by the BOA, and because none of the plans call for land acquisition, the airport commission removed it from the final resolution, which it passed unanimously at the commission’s Feb 8. meeting.

Opitz gave the following list of improvements:

Middleton Library, Pleasant View Golf Course to Reopen with Limited Services

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton will be able to move forward with opening some services back up after Gov. Tony Evers slightly loosened restrictions on what can and cannot be open.

The Middleton Public Library and Pleasant View Golf Course will both be allowed to open with some restrictions. Neither can open before the original Safer at Home order runs out on April 24.

Jocelyne Sansing, director of the Middleton Public Library, said in the Good Neighbor Hub meeting last week that she is not yet sure what their opening plan will look like, and did not have a solid opening date at press time. The library will only be able to do curbside pickup.

“It will be a coordinated effort based on interpretation of the order, following a lot along the lines of restaurant curbside pickup,” she explained.
