Middleton gunning for first-ever state title

Jeff Kind has taken Middleton’s girls basketball program to the state tournament a remarkable nine times since 2008. Overall, Kind has led the Cardinals to state 12 times since 1993.

In that stretch, Middleton has reached the state championship game four times, but is 0-4 in title contests.

Can 2020 finally be the year Kind and the Cardinals bring home a gold ball?

Middleton earned a trip back to state last Saturday with a thrilling 61-58 win over Madison Memorial in a WIAA Division 1 sectional final.

The Cardinals are now the No. 1 seed at the state tournament will battle fourth-seeded Oconomowoc in a state semifinal game on Friday at 6:35 at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Second-seeded and defending state champion Bay Port meets third-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels in the other semifinal game.

The winners advance to the state championship game Saturday at approximately 8:15 p.m.

Season ends for MHS boys

OCONOMOWOC — Middleton boys basketball coach Kevin Bavery had seen this movie throughout a frustrating season.

And Bavery certainly wasn’t in the mood for a sequel.

Turnovers. Questionable decisions. Ill-advised shots.

They were all part of the Cardinals’ script this winter. And Middleton had them once again during a 62-48 loss at Oconomowoc in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal last Friday.

Middleton, the 11th-seed in its sectional, finished the year 9-14. Oconomowoc, the No. 6 seed, improved to 14-9, then upset third-seeded Madison Memorial the following night.

“I honestly felt like we were the better team,” Bavery said. “And yet the results, at the end of the day, they speak for you. We were 9-14 and 9-14 is the reality. It’s the old NFL adage, right? You are what your record says you are.”

Sick? Stay Home

Every time someone near me coughs, I give them the side eye and slowly back away because of the possibility that they have Coronavirus.

I should put a disclaimer on that statement–I back away from anyone who is coughing and hacking because I don’t know where you have been, who you have seen or what you might be carrying with you. It’s not just Coronavirus that I am trying to avoid, but all sicknesses.

I sell vintage jewelry on eBay as a hobby, mostly to fund my own jewelry addiction, so I frequent a lot of antique stores, thrift stores and secondhand shops. Last week the woman behind the counter at one of the shops  was about to cough a lung up as I reluctantly handed her my debt card to ring up my purchases. I watched as she coughed for what seemed like 10 minutes into her hand while my card was in the machine. She pulled it out, smiled at me and asked, “Do you need a receipt?”

“No,” I thought, “But I need some soap and water.”

Town Looks at Smaller Sunflower Days Event

TOWN OF MIDDLETON–After losing nearly $20,000 hosting Sunflower Days last year and having only an estimated $8,811 available this year, the Town of Middleton’s Tourism Commission is looking to stage an event smaller than the annual nine-day celebration of blossoming sunflowers.

Last year, the Town of Middleton contracted with Race Days Events, Inc. to manage the festival that grew too large for the Friends of Pope Farm Conversancy to continue managing at Pope Farm Conservancy.

The event generated $48,056 in revenue from the first-ever $4 admission fee, 5k run entry fees, donations and sponsorships, but spent $167,643 on shuttle buses, labor, equipment, Race Days’ management contract, website and media expenses.

Bates Sentenced for Selling Crack

MADISON–A Middleton man who was described as a small time but persistent drug dealer was sentenced Tuesday in federal court to five and a half years in prison for selling crack cocaine.

Cameron A. Bates, 31, has accumulated two convictions for cocaine delivery, three for THC possession and substantial battery in the past 14 years. He was on probation for cocaine distribution when he sold crack cocaine five times to undercover law enforcement in July and August last year.

Bates’ prior drug convictions qualified him as a Career Offender under the advisory sentencing guidelines which elevated his sentencing guideline of 12.5 and 18 years in prison.

However, District Judge William Conley used his discretion and didn’t apply the Career Offender status to Bates, saying his prior record didn’t justify amplifying his sentence, and allowed Conley to impose a sentence of five and a half years.

Aldachach Charged With Bail Jumping, Plea & Sentencing Delayed

MADISON–A former Middleton High School student will go to trial on charges that he allegedly sexually assaulted a 14 year old coed in 2018.

Mohammad K. Aldachach, 20 was scheduled to enter a guilty plea Feb. 28 and be sentenced, but that was pulled off Circuit Judge Susan Crawford’s calendar after Aldachach was charged with two counts of felony bail jumping on Feb. 24.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 12:13 a.m. on Feb. 23, Middleton police officer Thomas Francis was following a vehicle with dealer registration plates in the vicinity of University Avenue and Park Street. Francis followed the vehicle for about a mile during which he detected a strong and persistent odor of marijuana emanating the vehicle he was following. The vehicle failed to come to a complete stop at Park and Maywood streets an again at Park Street and Donna Drive

Tanin powers Middleton past Craig

BELOIT — Middleton’s girls basketball team often exchanges warm-up tops when they’re going through their pre-game drills.

For example, Karina Bursac might don Berkley Smith’s shirt, Smith might wear Lauryn Abezoid’s and Abezoid might put on Kendall Roquet’s.

Like the rest of her teammates, Sitori Tanin was in a different pre-game top Thursday night. When it was time for the real Tanin to step up, though, boy, did she deliver.

In Middleton’s WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal, Tanin had an enormous night with 26 points and 17 rebounds and powered the Cardinals to a 62-55 win over Janesville Craig at Beloit Memorial’s Barkin Arena. After a quiet first half in which she was plagued by fouls, Tanin erupted with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the second half alone.

Metro Lynx advances to state title game

MADISON — It didn’t take long for junior forward Ava Jambor and her second-ranked Middleton co-op teammates to make a impact at Veterans Memorial Coliseum-Alliant Energy Center on Thursday afternoon.

Just 1 minute, 54 seconds actually.

That’s how long it took for Jambor to record the first goal for the Metro Lynx — made up of girls from Middleton, Madison Memorial, Madison West, Madison Edgewood and Verona — and ignite a 5-2 victory over the Beloit Memorial co-op in a WIAA prep girls hockey state semifinal game.

“I was actually kind of shocked,” said Jambor, who entered the game with four goals and seven assists this season for the Lynx, “ I just saw the puck, I shot it and I scored. Nothing major really goes through your head, you see the puck, you shoot it.”

Jambor, one of six Middleton girls on the Lynx roster, was the recipient of the first of two assists in the game from sophomore forward Kaya Pelton-Byce.
