The Hunt

I was reminded Wednesday of how fragile and thin the veneer of civilization is.

This was not one of my quiet, plodding, vaguely philosophical realizations. It did not come with a slow nod or a breathy “aha.” No, this came with the crack of a gunshot slicing through daggers of sleet. This came with the thud of a dead body hitting the muddy earth. And just like that, I was up to my arms in viscera, having literally the most visceral experience of my life.

Board Determines Quarry Parcel Falls Under Conforming Use

TOWN OF BERRY–In a Dec. 2 meeting that last just over 15 minutes, the Dane County Board of Adjustments (BOA) made a decision on a parcel of land slated for quarry expansion by Yahara Materials. The board found that the 40-acre piece of land, known as the Meinholz property, was conforming status and did fall under the Town of Springfield ordinance jurisdiction, which would require a conditional use permit from the town for mineral extraction.

The decision upheld a determination by the Town of Springfield Zoning Administrator, Kory Anderson, which stated that the property was not continuous use, a requirement for non-conforming status.

Middleton Mayor to Run for Second Term

MIDDLETON–Middleton Mayor Gurdip Brar said he would be running for a second term in the April 2020 Election. Brar has served one term as mayor and previously served on the Middleton City Council for nine years and was in the Conservancy Lands Committee for one and a half terms before becoming mayor in 2017.

“I’m not sure I was ready at the time,” Brar said of his first campaign for mayor, but now he has experience under his belt. He said that over the past two and a half years, he has built relationships with other community leaders and governments, which he feels would make him a more effective mayor in a second term.

Brar said he has started working on some projects that are ongoing, and one of the reason he seeks a second term is to continue that work.

Boundary Committee Sends One Scenario to School Board

MIDDLETON–The Internal Attendance Boundary Committee voted to advance one of the five middle school options to the Board of Education at their 14th meeting on Nov. 20 at Kromrey Middle School.

The committee voted to advance the Pope Farm Scenario. In that scenario, Neighborhoods 24, 25 and 26S would attend Kromrey, while the remaining Pope Farm neighborhoods would go to Glacier Creek Middle School. Neighborhood 24 currently attends Glacier Creek although under this scenario all Blackhawk neighborhood students would attend the same middle school.

Five percent of middle school students would change schools. Consultant Mark Roffers noted during a presentation of the middle school scenarios that in the Pope Farm Scenario those same neighborhoods would likely shift if the District builds a third middle school in the future.

Suspects Sought in AT&T Burglary

MIDDLETON-On Nov. 29 at 4:21 a.m., Middleton Police were dispatched to an alarm at the AT&T Store located at 2173 Deming Way. On arrival, police determined that the business had been burglarized by forced entry and the suspects were no longer on scene.

Upon reviewing security footage it appears that two suspects got into the business by breaking a window. They attempted to gain access to another room in the store but were unsuccessful.  The suspects were in the store approximately one minute then fled prior to police arrival in an unknown vehicle.  It was also determined that a third suspect was likely involved as a “look out.”

The suspects are described as:

Suspect #1 was wearing light or gray pants, a black hoodie, face was covered, gloves and gray shoes.

Suspect #2 was wearing all black or dark clothing, face was covered and carrying some type of dark bag or backpack

Boys basketball team enters the great unknown

Kevin Bavery is set to begin his 29th season as a boys’ varsity basketball head coach.

The overwhelming majority of that time, Bavery has had a good idea where his team might be headed.

But Bavery — who came to Middleton in 2006 — admits he’s never been more befuddled by a group as he is the 2019-’20 Cardinals.

“Never have I had so little clue as to where we might finish,” Bavery said.

There are plenty of reasons why Bavery is perplexed.

Middleton lost four starters from last year’s team that went 13-10 overall and finished in fifth place in the Big Eight Conference at 10-8. While the Cardinals will be inexperienced, they have a number of interesting pieces that could help them surprise this winter.

Middleton begins its new season by hosting Verona Dec. 12 at 7:15 p.m.

Marcos leaves MHS, headed to Madison Country Day

All of his ducks were in a row. And Franco Marcos thought this was the perfect time to exit stage left.

Marcos, who spent the last 23 years as Middleton’s girls volleyball coach, felt the Cardinals’ program was in terrific shape when the 2019 season ended. So Marcos — who wanted to free up some time to pursue other passions — resigned as Middleton’s boss on Oct. 29.

Little did Marcos know that his time away from the high school scene would be short-lived.

Late last week, Marcos accepted the head coaching job at Madison Country Day. The position won’t be quite as demanding, meaning Marcos can likely pursue his dream of playing in the men’s senior baseball national championships, which take place every November in Arizona.

“I wasn’t looking for another job or anything,” Marcos said. “But this just seemed like a really good fit.”

Since 1997, Marcos and Middleton were an awfully good fit.
