Racer

My best friend Heather and I, who is more like a sister to me (her kids call us aunt and uncle), have been cooking up a plan for the last couple of months. Back in May, my niece, Keyla, called me to ask me if Matt and I would sell her my Miata. She has been taking driver’s ed this summer and gets a school permit in August.

At the time I wasn’t sure what we were going to do with the car. It is nearly 20 years old, and I have driven it for more than 10 of those years. I was concerned about how we would come to a price. Insurance is higher on a sports car, and Keya doesn’t know how to drive a stick. These were all of my arguments.

Keyla is very responsible for an adult, let alone a teenager, but all of these things were concerns for all the actual adults, not just me. Heather and I spent many nights on the phone talking about whether she should have a car that my whole family calls “the Racer.”

Plan Commission Shows Support for Hotel, but Doesn’t Approve Concept Plan

MIDDLETON–The City of Middleton Plan Commission reviewed the concept plan for a proposed four story, 87-unit hotel at 3055 Deming Way titled Towneplace Suites by Marriott. While the plan commission did not grant concept approval because of safety concerns raised by planning staff, there was support for the project on the site should the concerns be addressed.

Towneplace Suites would be an extended stay hotel between Spectrum Brands and Nursery Dr. just north of the confluence pond. The building would be oriented lengthwise to face Highway 12 and be surround by 88 parking spaces and two storm water ponds.

Planning and zoning administrator Mark Opitz said staff are concerned about the amount of impervious surface on the site, access to the site and the orientation to the street.

Optiz said should the development move forward staff are recommending another access point into the site be required because as proposed there is only one entrance and exit.

Stonebrook Estates Water Action Delayed

MIDDLETON–After a boisterous and, at times, emotional discussion Monday between Stonebrook Estates homeowners and Town of Middleton officials about a new a storm water detention pond, it was decided another meeting was needed.

The town board wanted to consider putting a $525,000 storm water pond in Stonebrook out for bid but many of the north side subdivision’s 66 families were adamantly against it and said their concerns were being ignored.

The town board has selected a 40-acre outlot between Ellington Way and Stonebrook Circle for the detention pond and has an easement recorded on the subdivision’s mid-1990s final plat that allows the town to “manage storm water”.

Middleton Attack Part of Secret Service Study on Mass Shootings

WASHINGTON DC–The Middleton workplace shooting that took place at Paradigm (then known as WTS Paradigm) on Sept. 19, 2018, was used as part of a study by the US Secret Service regarding mass shootings in the United States.

The survey, “Mass Attacks in Public Spaces–2018,” produced by the agency’s National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) examined 27 shootings from Jan.-Dec. 2018. This is only the second year the assessment has been done, with the inaugural study in 2017, which examined 28 shootings. The study required that three or more people had been injured in an incident to be considered a mass shooting–there is no standard definition of “mass shooting” in the US. The study considers public spaces to be anywhere people gather in public, places of worship, shopping malls, schools and the workplace.
