Family Hangs Huge Banner in Protest to Sunflower Days

MIDDLETON–Some people have barn quilts on the side of their buildings, but the Pope/Zoerb family has something a little different, a 60-foot banner spans the barn on the family’s property, which sits next to Pope Farm Conservancy.

The bright yellow banner reads: Sunflower Days Should Be Free and Open: ProtectPopeFarmConservancy.com. It’s in protest to the way the Town of Middleton, who resumed the festival this year after the Friends of Pope Farm Conservancy decided not to host the event, is allegedly commercializing the conservancy. The family is also concerned about the use of neonicotinoid treated seed, and is upset with the lack of communication the town has shown, all of which are outlined on the website.

David Zoerb, who is the spokesperson for the Pope/Zoerb family, said that out of frustration with trying to work with the city, and the concerns listed above, the family decided to place the banner to draw attention to their cause.

Slumber

After my wife and daughter and the dogs went to sleep and the cat woke up, I unzipped a black case filled with wires, tubes and instructions. I was doing a home sleep study, and the doctor’s office loaned me a device to monitor my sleeping and rate my slumber.

I did it because I kept getting pop-up ads telling me that I might have sleep apnea, and that if I do, my heart will probably explode, or perhaps I’ll just be very sleepy and inefficient when I try to write my weekly column in the afternoon, in other words right now.

I agreed to do it because I like surprises, and medical bills are always incredibly surprising.

When my doctor instructed me to take a sleep test, my wife promptly instructed me to find out how much it would cost first. I’m not sure how much my health is worth, but I assume she needed to know if the procedure would cost more than the agreed upon figure above which I am completely replaceable.

Moon Landing

I was about two and a half years old when the Apollo 11 first landed on the moon 50 years ago, and Neil Armstrong declared the event, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” I have no recollection of that specific event, but I do remember other early moon missions. I remember watching the massive rockets take off from Cape Canaveral in Florida. I remember the marketing items that followed, particularly, moon boots.

When reading about all the stories surrounding the anniversary of the moon landing, I came across a YouTube video of the other day called, “Buzz Aldrin Punches a Guy.” Well, I had to know what that was about, so I pulled up the video.

In it, a filmmaker is harassing Aldrin about the moon landing being a hoax. He was in his face with a Bible, calling him a liar and yelling at him to swear on the Bible that he landed on the moon.

University Avenue Rebuild Complete

MIDDLETON–University Ave., which reopened July 17, underwent a major overhaul spanning from Cayuga Ct. to Park St. that took cooperation from multiple levels of government, businesses, contractors, utility and public safety workers and the patience of thousands of drivers since it began in April. The overhaul includes repair of water and sewer, new traffic signals replacement, major intersection improvements at Parmenter Street, new concrete curb and asphalt pavement.

The $1.5 million construction cost was split between the city and the county each paying half. Dane County Executive Joe Parisi says the project improved public safety.

“As Dane County grows, it is important that we continue upgrading our roads to maintain public safety,” says Parisi. “These improvements to University Avenue mean safer travel for drivers and pedestrians and a more robust infrastructure for Dane County moving forward.”

Sunflower Days Kicks Off Today

MIDDLETON–Sunflower Days at Pope Farm Conservancy on Old Sauk Rd. kicks off today and will run daily through August 4. Due to safety concerns, the event was cancelled last year by the Friends of Pope Farm Conservancy and revived by the Town of Middleton in 2019 after the one-year hiatus.

To address the concerns the town decided to charge admission to the event and shuttle visitors to and from the 10-plus acre sunflower field. Shuttles will run from Wisconsin Brewing Company, Verona, Middleton Firefighters Memorial Park, Middleton and Blackhawk Church, Middleton (except for Sunday), and transport visitors the short distance to the conservancy.

The event will feature two speakers:

Resterday

When your child first learns to speak, words are like snowflakes. Each and every expression is totally unique. Like a thousand little verbal fingerprints.

But all of the old words are falling away, now. The “piddow” on which my daughter used to rest her head has been replaced by a boring old “pillow,” just like the one on which everyone else sleeps. The big, messy bites of “melon-melon” she’d take on a hot summer afternoon has become normal, boring “watermelon.” The way she used to look at two flavors of ice cream and ask: “Hhhm. Should I get the one one, or the wudder one?” That’s slipping away too.

These days, most of the words she says–words like “this is boring” and “you are mean” and “I want to watch a movie on your phone”–could be said by pretty much anyone. And most people, as I think we’ve established in this column over the course of the past several years, are a heady cocktail of mean and boring.
