Flottmeyer plays hero for Middleton

For many athletes, the final seconds of dramatic games are one giant blur.

For Hannah Flotttmeyer, it was the exact opposite.

Middleton’s girls basketball team trailed Janesville Craig by two points in the closing seconds last Friday when Flottmeyer, their terrific senior center, grabbed an offensive rebound. Flottmeyer scored with 1.4 seconds remaining, was fouled, then hit the ensuing free throw to give the Cardinals a dramatic 68-67 come-from-behind win.

“Those final seconds of the game felt like slow-motion,” Flottmeyer said. “I wanted it, I wasn't going to jeopardize the conference title. Making the game winning shot was exhilarating and forever memorable, but I owe it to my team.”

Middleton, which trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half, took over sole possession of first place in the Big Eight Conference for the time being.

MHS girls earn No. 2 seed

Jeff Kind offered up a gentleman’s agreement to John Olson.

And while the offer was rebuffed, it was worth a shot.

Kind, Middleton’s girls basketball coach, told Olson — the head coach at Sun Prairie — that whoever wins the Battle of the Cardinals Thursday night should be the No. 1 seed in the WIAA Division 1 Janesville Craig Sectional.

Olson, believing he had the upper hand, said thanks but no thanks. Turns out that was the right move.

At the postseason seeding meeting held last Saturday, Sun Prairie received the No. 1 seed in the sectional, while Middleton settled for No. 2. Middleton, which has won eight straight games, is 15-5 overall and leads the Big Eight Conference at 14-2, while Sun Prairie is 15-4, 13-2.

The difference, though, is Sun Prairie won at Middleton on Jan. 5. The teams meet again in Sun Prairie Thursday at 7 p.m.

“They were No. 1 on all the ballots,” Kind said of Sun Prairie. “The head to head is huge.”

Middleton sends 10 wrestlers to sectionals

Kevin Meicher is a man on a mission.

Now, Middleton’s standout senior wrestler hopes that takes him back to the UW Kohl Center — and a few of his Cardinals pals come along, as well.

Meicher finished first at 152 pounds at the WIAA Division 1 Waunakee Regional last Saturday. Meicher, a University of Minnesota recruit, improved to 28-0 this season and won a regional title for the fourth straight year.

“It’s my senior year, I’m throwing it all out there on the mat, not holding anything back,” Meicher said. “There’s nothing to hold back. I’m going to be tired at the end of the match anyway.”

Meicher was one of 10 Cardinals who advanced to the Verona Sectional, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to sectionals.

Middleton’s Elliot Zanon (182) and Gavin Adler (220) both finished second at regionals.

Boys basketball team falls at Craig

JANESVILLE — Middleton boys basketball coach Kevin Bavery summed it up best.

“When you’re down 10 and your offense is stagnant, to give yourself a chance to win at the buzzer, you’ve got to give yourself credit for that,” Bavery said.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that wasn’t enough to earn a victory.

Senior guard Jack Boyle’s three-point shot at the buzzer rimmed out last Saturday. And that allowed host Janesville Craig to escape with a 45-43 win over the Cardinals.

Middleton, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the Big Eight Conference. The Cougars improved to 10-9, 7-8.

Middleton senior guard Sam Close finished with a game-high 15 points, while Boyle added 13. Junior Aaron Leverson led Craig with 14 points.

“It was kind of a fun game to coach, yet it was a frustrating game,” Bavery said.

Especially the final moments.

Town Clerk Resigns, One of Many Resignations Over Last 18 Months

MIDDLETON–Lisa Pardon, town clerk in the Town of Middleton tendered her resignation with the town in late January, with Feb. 1 as her last day. In a letter sent to town leaders, Pardon cited her run for the town board against incumbent Richard Oberle as the reason she is leaving because of concerns about her election job duties being a conflict of interest.

Pardon said she contacted the Wisconsin Election Commission to learn if she would be able to perform all the duties required and learned she could do everything but be in the polling place. She goes on to say that if elected she would have to quit the position.

She also said she has timed the resignation so that the town will have time before the April election to have everything in place.

“I wanted to give them time to advertise and hire a new clerk,” she said.

Officers Receive Legislature’s Hometown Hero Award

MADISON–Officers from the Middleton Police Department Richard O’Conner, and Tyler Loether, and Dane County Sheriff Deputies David Lambrecht and Matthew Earll, were recipients of the of the Wisconsin Legislature’s Hometown Hero Award on Feb. 12.

The four were involved in shooting and killing Anthony Tong when they, along with many other law enforcement officers, responded to an active shooter in the workplace at WTS Paradigm (now known as Paradigm) in September 2018.

An investigation found that the officers repeatedly told Tong to drop his weapon, before firing upon him when he refused. An investigation following the incident cleared the men of any wrongdoing.

Wisconsin State Rep. Dianne Hesselbein (D-79) nominated the officers for the award, and said she felt the men were deserving of the honor because of the courage and valor they showed during the shooting, which left four people wounded.

School Board Updated on Elementary School Design

MIDDLETON–The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School Board reviewed the latest design schematic for the new elementary school planned near the Pope Farm Conservancy. The new elementary school is part of a multi building expansion plan approved by voters in a 2018 referendum for $138.9 million.

Superintendent George Mavroulis said he was thrilled on the progress made.

“The work continues,” Mavroulis said. “I think every time we see a more refined version it is just so exciting.”

Architects for the project, Robin Savola and Mike Schwindenhammer of Eppstein Uhen Architects, presented the latest revisions for the elementary school at the board’s Feb. 4 meeting. They also detailed plans for remodeling the kitchen at Sauk Trail Elementary.

The Sauk Trail kitchen remodel is expected to start right after school is out and be done in late July or early August, Schwindenhammer said.
