City Council Changes Course On Terrace Avenue Redevelopment Project

Plans to redevelop Terrace Avenue and North High Point Road were turned on their head last week when the Middleton Common Council abruptly decided to proceed with phase two of the project before it tackles phase one.

The new plan is markedly different than any of the three options recommended by the Middleton Plan Commission seven says earlier.

Phase two involves rebuilding Terrace Avenue between Parmenter Street and North High Point Road.

The project, which would be funded using Tax Increment Financing and cost an estimated $2.8 million, includes new sewer and water utilities and a new streetscape using decorative bricks to match pedestrian friendly areas elsewhere in the downtown. Construction is slated to begin in 2014.

Facing Loss Of 160 Acres To The City, The Town Will Look Into Incorporation

The Middleton Town Board will look into its options for incorporation or taking steps to otherwise block Erdman Holdings, Inc’s plans to annex 160 acres from the town into the City of Middleton.

On Monday, the board agreed to place hiring an attorney on its May 6 meeting agenda, at the suggestion of town attorney Tom Voss. Erdman is proposing a development called "Prairie View Ridge."

The town and the city have a border agreement reached in 1994 but it doesn’t explicitly cover the Erdman property, which is located just north of the Pleasant View Golf Course, said town administrator David Shaw.

The town hired attorney Richard Nordeng when it signed a border agreement with the City of Madison in 2003 and he likely would be used again, Shaw said.

Board supervisor Timothy Roehl urged getting legal background on the town’s options because state law on incorporation has changed since the town last looked into it a few years ago.

City Works To Restore Lakeview Fishing Pond

A city employee is spearheading an ambitious plan to transform the pond at Lakeview Park from a morass of overgrown weeds into a sustainable fishery. And he wants to do it without using any tax dollars.

Kurt Breunig, a Middleton Public Lands Department worker, is focusing on making the three-acre fishing hole particularly accessible and welcoming for young anglers and disabled individuals.

In a sense, the project began several decades ago, when a young Breunig began experiencing the great outdoors with his father.

“I’ve been fishing with him since I was five years old, and not just once or twice a year but all the time,” he recalled. “We’d go to Governor Dodge [State Park], and I remember always stopping for ice cream on the way home.”

Years later, Breunig still enjoys fishing with his father, who now uses a wheelchair.

West Middleton Parent Is Arrested For Making Threats: Woman Allegedly Mentioned Sandy Hook Shooting

A Madison woman is in custody after allegedly making threats against West Middleton Elementary School.

Andrea Holmes, age 31, was arrested by Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputies Tuesday and is currently awaiting court appearances for disorderly conduct and a harassment restraining order.

A correspondence sent to parents and guardians by the school district said Holmes, the parent of a child at the school, made “serious threats” when she became agitated during a phone conversation with West Middleton principal Todd Macklem.

Macklem told authorities Holmes made reference to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Dane County deputies and Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District superintendent Don Johnson met at the school to discuss the incident shortly after it occured. After deputies contacted Holmes to discuss her statements, they made a decision to arrest her.

Charity Basketball Game Raises $6,800

More than 200 players participated in the SLAM DUMP 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday afternoon at MHS.

Senior Joshua Bunting, junior Jed Munson and sophomore Ben Hershberger organized this year's event. This was the third year SLAM DUMP was held. This year's event raised approximately $6,800 for Amor, Fe, y Ezperanza (AFE), an organization dedicated to providing children of the city dump in Tegucigalpa, Honduras with education, food and technical skills. The title means "Love, Faith and Hope" when translated into English.

"We had a lot of fund doing this,'' said Hershberger, who also returned to Honduras this past summer along with Munson to build a house for one of the families living in the dump.

The idea for a fundraiser began in the summer of 2010 when a group of middle and high school students embarked on a youth missions trip to Honduras. There, they witnessedan impoverished community inhabiting a local landfill.
