Wrestlers win Baraboo Invite

Middleton’s wrestling team has been looking for a signature win all season.

Last Saturday, the Cardinals got exactly that.

Middleton went to the Baraboo Thunderbird Classic and won the seven-team tournament.

The Cardinals finished with 208.0 points and edged runner-up Baraboo (194.5). Tomah (181.0), Grafton (115.0) and Adams-Friendship (106.5) rounded out the top five.

Middleton had four first place finishers. Those came from Jake Cain at 138 pounds, Shay Haase (160), Taggart Haase (170) and Sean Benedict (285).

Cain notched four pins, won one match by forfeit and improved to 29-1 on the year. Cain’s toughest match came against Baraboo’s William Pierce, but he pinned the Thunderbirds wrestler in 5:27.

Shay Haase went 5-0 on the day, including two pins.

Validity Of Teacher's School Board Bid Called Into Question

A teacher, union grievance chairman and longtime critic of current school district leadership has filed to run for a seat on the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District (MCPASD) Board of Education.

Some in the district, as well as an attorney for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, said David Dahmen would be in violation of multiple laws and codes that are on the books to prevent conflicts of interest.

Home, Cooking: Building a community one cupcake at a time

Annemarie Spitznagle keeps a notebook. She has since she was a kid.

“My mom found lists and notes to myself everywhere,” Spitznagle said of her childhood.

More than a journal or diary, the notebooks have been like close friends, the kind who listen patiently and reserve judgment. The contents of Spitznagle’s notebooks have changed as she’s grown up and her interests have evolved. But through it all, two themes have remained constant: home and cooking.

Spitznagle, the daughter of an Air Force pilot, was born in Japan but raised in Louisiana. It was in Louisiana Spitznagle’s identity took hold in her family’s Cajun culture. Central to her family’s way of life was food. In a Cajun home, the kitchen is court and food is king.

“I’d come home from school, drop off my backpack and join my mom in the kitchen,” Spitznagle said.

Meals took hours to prepare and almost as long to enjoy with one another. Spitznagle was in charge of desserts.

Former Middleton High School Student Arrested in Mexico For 2010 Shooting

When authorities began tracking a Mexican national suspected of killing 19-year-old Antonio Perez, they didn’t know the fugitive’s whereabouts.

In fact, they weren’t even sure if the suspect, a Middleton High School student, was a teenager or a man in his early 20s. The person they sought also went by three names: Ivan Mateo-Lozenzo, Alberto Ramirez and Arain Gutierrez.

The two-and-a-half year investigation that followed culminated December 28 in the arrest of the individual now known as Arain Gutierrez. He was captured in Cancun, Mexico.

His real age is yet to be verified, according to authorities.

Gutierrez was awaiting extradition as of this newspaper’s press time, but the incident long ago prompted local school officials to reexamine how they verify the identities of their pupils. (A law enforcement agent familiar with the case said extradition of Gutierrez could take as long as a year.)

Suspects Are Taking Town of Middleton Residents' Mail From Mailboxes

The Dane County Sheriff’s Department has asked for help from Town of Middleton residents, according to Sara Ludtke, the town’s Deputy Clerk/Public Works Coordinator.

“On the north side of Town, specifically along Meadow Valley Road and parts of Airport Road, people (they believe it’s more than one person) have been going through mailboxes, taking mail, opening mail, throwing mail into snow banks, etc.,” Ludke said Monday. “Try to retrieve your mail shortly after it’s delivered.”

“If you notice that your mail has been open or realize that you are missing mail and there is no one in the area, please contact Deputy Garrett Page at 575-5964 (during day-time hours) or Deputy Mike Mohr at 220-0356 (during evening hours),” she added.

She said to immediately report any suspicious activity in progress by dialing 9-1-1.

Challengers Line Up to Face Incumbent Town Board Supervisors

All three incumbents on the Middleton Town Board will face challengers on the April ballot.

Greg DiMiceli, a former plan commission member, will oppose incumbent Milo Breunig for town chair. Cynthia Richson, a current plan commission member, will oppose incumbent Tim Roehl for Seat 1. Troy Alton will oppose incumbent Bill Kolar for Seat 2.

Richson is an attorney who was worked for the Wisconsin Investment Board, in the insurance industry, and has served on the Plan Commission for more than two years. She said she was inspired to run after the town board renewed a conditional-use permit for the Madison Central Montessori School in 2011.

“It was a very controversial decision - more than 200 people signed petitions opposing it,” said Richson.
