Open House Held On TIF-Funded Terrace Ave. Redevelopment

The City of Middleton held a public informational meeting Tuesday on a project to realign the Terrace Avenue and High Point Road intersection and reconstruct Terrace Avenue from just west of High Point Road to just east of Parmenter Street.

The purpose of the project is to create a “stronger link between the Greenway Center development area and the Downtown Business District and to replace aging infrastructure and utilities along Terrace Avenue,” according to  Abby Attoun-Tucker, Middleton’s assistant director of community development.

Phase I of the project is scheduled to take place in 2013 and includes a realignment of the intersection of Terrace Avenue and High Point Road along with construction of a public parking lot at the intersection.

Hockey Cardinals push winning streak to six

The WIAA hockey playoffs are less than three weeks away.

And Middleton is picking the perfect time to play some of its best hockey of the season.

The Cardinals stretched their winning streak to six games last week with a pair of impressive road wins.

Middleton defeated Monona Grove, 6-3, on Friday. The Cardinals then turned around and toppled Janesville, 2-1, in overtime last Saturday.

Middleton improved to 12-3 overall and is second in the Big Eight Conference at 8-2.

“The weekend went well,” Middleton coach Steve Libert said. “Friday night we played with energy and really pushed the pace of the game. Saturday we came out a bit listless, but as the game went on, we got better and better.”

Middleton got two goals and an assist from Danny Klagos in its win over Monona Grove. Clayton Brown had a goal and two assists, Jake Bunz and Taylor Dickert both had a goal and an assist, while Jordan Hylbert had a goal.

Rongstad, Middleton roll past Parker

JANESVILLE — Derek Rongstad and Middleton’s boys basketball team have seen it happen too many times before.

You let an inferior opponent hang around, you give it life, and you can eventually pay the price.

The Cardinals made sure that didn’t happen last Friday.

Middleton went to Janesville Parker, scored the first 17 points of the game, and cruised to an 85-59 win. The Cardinals built a 48-22 halftime lead, stretched their advantage to 72-30 in the second half and posted their most decisive win of the year.

“We definitely didn’t want a slow start against a team like Parker,” said Rongstad, the Cardinals’ standout junior guard. “We thought if we could get off to a big start, they might lay down a little bit.”

Rongstad scored a game-high 23 points in just three quarters. Rongstad made 7-of-14 shots, including five of Middleton’s 12 three-pointers.

Students Practice Government In Action

The U.S. Congress could learn a thing or two from MHS students.

MHS students passed 10 of 15 bills that they voted upon during two legislative sessions held in December. The bills were part of the new semester-long U.S. Government and Politics class.

The course was developed by a team of social studies teachers as part of the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District curriculum renewal process and has been three years in the making.

“I was very pleased with the job the students did,’’ said David Piovanetti, one of the class instructors. “They took their roles as lawmakers seriously and acted professionally.’’

For three months, students studied the legislative process, researched issues and drafted their own bills. On Nov. 15, more than 300 students participated in the inaugural Hearing Day. The session simulated the U.S. legislative committee hearing process, Piovanetti said.

Hansen Leaving MOM

Kathy Hansen is stepping down from her position as Middleton Outreach Ministry’s executive director. She was hired in May of 2012, and was MOM’s first female director and its fourth director in five years.

“Since my arrival I have been blown away by all the good work MOM does in our community,” Hansen said. “With a strong committed staff and solid programs it is easy to see all the meaningful work that is making lives better each and every day.”

When she arrived, Hansen said she wanted to bring sensibilities from the for-profit sector to her work at MOM, helping maximize the number of people the organization could reach.

Hansen said she is leaving for personal reasons, primarily because the commute from Lake Geneva to Middleton had become too difficult. She called 2012 “a tremendous year for MOM.”

Citizens Pay More For Sewer, EMS

The arrival of the New Year ushered in fee and rate increases for most local citizens. Higher sanitary sewer rates and EMS fees, which went into effect January 1, were approved by the Middleton Common Council in December.

The Common Council first changed its general ordinances to include higher rates for most sewer customers. For many, the rates are up between five and eight percent.

Quarterly service charges are dependent on meter size. Those with a 5/8” meter saw charges rise from $18.51 to $19.55, with similar increases for sizes all the way up to 6”, for which the rate went from $336.53 to $355.39. Those with meters that are 8, 10 or 12 inches will see their quarterly service charges remain flat.

The sanitary sewer volume charge (per 100 gallons) increased from $0.218 to $0.237 for all customers.

Region Braces For Bitter Cold

The National Weather Service says strong winds and plummeting temperatures will make for a bitterly cold combination this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. These are expected to be the coldest days of the winter so far with highs only in the single digits and dangerously low wind chills. Wisconsin Emergency Management’s ReadyWisconsin campaign is urging families to take appropriate measures against the arctic chill, according to a press release issued by the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs.
